Chapter 4 - The Federal Ledger

The interrogation room at the federal building downtown smelled of stale coffee, industrial carpet cleaner, and fluorescent lighting that hummed with a low, maddening vibration.
Eleanor sat across the cold metal table, her hands cuffed loosely in front of her. She hadn't said a word since the federal agents had dragged her out of the Vance estate thirty minutes ago. Across the table sat Special Agent Miller, a weary-eyed investigator whose tie was pulled down an inch too low, revealing a throat scarred by years of high-stakes white-collar investigations.
"Let's go over it one more time, Mrs. Russo," Agent Miller said, sliding a manila folder across the table and opening it to reveal a series of printed bank statements and corporate wire transfers. "Your husband’s primary financial conduit, Marcus Sterling, initiated a series of multi-million-dollar transfers through Vanguard Holdings yesterday afternoon. The destination account isn't registered to a syndicate front. It’s registered to a private trust bearing your maiden name."
Eleanor looked down at the documents. The numbers were staggering—twelve million dollars shifted out of Dominic’s offshore holdings into an account she had never seen, using a digital signature authorized by her own legal power of attorney.
"I didn't authorize these transfers," Eleanor said, her voice flat and steady.
"Every single transfer requires a dual biometric confirmation and a secondary cryptographic key," Miller replied, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the metal table. "A key that is split between your husband's private server and your personal tablet. Unless you're telling me someone stole your tablet out of your penthouse suite—which is guarded by armed men twenty-four hours a day—someone with intimate access moved twelve million dollars out from under Dominic’s nose."
"Julian told me Marcus was the leak," Eleanor murmured, half to herself.
Miller let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Julian Vance is a corporate shark who’s been playing both sides of the fence for three years. He’s been feeding information to my office on Dominic’s maritime operations in exchange for immunity on his own tax evasion charges. But yesterday, Julian didn't expect us to execute a search warrant on his estate while you happened to be standing in the dining room."
"If Julian is cooperating with you," Eleanor asked, raising her dark eyes to meet the agent's, "why am I sitting in handcuffs?"
"Because the warrant we executed on Julian's safe wasn't just for his tax records," Miller said, pulling a heavy plastic evidence bag from his desk and tossing it onto the metal table.
Inside the bag was an expensive, custom-built cryptographic flash drive—the exact model Dominic used to encrypt his syndicate's master ledger. And stamped across the casing of the drive was Eleanor's personal monogram.
Eleanor stared at the bag, a cold wave of realization washing over her.
It wasn't just Julian who had set her up. It wasn't just Clara who had traded her for four million dollars.
The entire operation—from the viral livestream at The Gilded Spoon to the faked corporate leak in Marseille, down to the multi-million-dollar transfers—was designed to make it look like she was the internal mastermind who had systematically gutted Dominic Russo’s empire from the inside out.
"They're framing me," Eleanor whispered.
"Or," Miller said softly, watching her reaction with clinical detachment, "you spent five years living in the shadow of a violent crime boss, realized the empire was crumbling under federal pressure, and decided to secure your own exit strategy before Dominic found out."
Before Eleanor could answer, the heavy steel door of the interrogation room swung open.
Agent Miller’s junior partner stepped inside, looking pale and thoroughly shaken, holding a secure tablet against his chest like a shield.
"Sir," the junior agent said, his voice dropping an octave. "You need to see this feed right now. All of them."
Miller frowned, standing up and walking around the table. "What is it? Another viral video?"
"No," the agent swallowed hard, tapping the screen to mirror it onto the wall-mounted monitor in the interrogation room. "Dominic Russo just bypassed every commercial broadcast satellite on the East Coast."
On the large wall screen, the harsh fluorescent lights of the interrogation room were suddenly drowned out by a live, high-definition broadcast of the fifty-fourth-floor penthouse of the Russo tower.
Dominic wasn't sitting at his desk. He was standing in the center of the minimalist living room, surrounded by his six enforcers. But they weren't holding weapons. Instead, every single one of them was standing in front of an open, burning suitcase filled with bundles of cash, letting the flames consume the evidence.
And facing the camera directly, staring through the lens with dead, terrifying clarity, was Dominic himself.
"Agent Miller," Dominic's voice boomed through the room's intercom system, recorded live and broadcast across every major news network and federal server simultaneously. "You have my wife in custody based on forged ledgers provided by a corrupt corporate executive named Julian Vance."
Dominic paused, a grim, humorless smile touching his lips.
"You think you caught the mastermind? You think Eleanor was stealing from me?" Dominic shook his head slowly. "Let me show you what happens when someone tries to touch what is mine."
On the screen, the camera panned to the side, revealing Julian Vance—bound, gagged, and tied securely to a chair in the center of the penthouse floor, his bespoke suit ruined, tears streaming down his face as one of Dominic's enforcers held a heavy ledger open in front of him.

"You have one hour to release my wife," Dominic said, his voice echoing with absolute, unyielding finality. "Or the federal government's star witness against me won't live to see the sunrise."
