Chapter 5 - The Ultimatum

The wall-mounted monitor in the federal interrogation room glowed with the high-definition feed of the penthouse, casting long, erratic shadows as the flames in Dominic’s burning suitcases flickered behind him.
Special Agent Miller stared at the screen, his face draining of all color. He looked from the broadcast of Julian Vance tied to a chair fifty floors above the city down to Eleanor sitting across the metal table in handcuffs.
"Your husband just committed an act of open war against a federal witness," Miller said, his voice dangerously tight as he reached for his radio clip. "He’s forcing a standoff on live television."
Eleanor didn't flinch. She sat back in her chair, the initial shock of the broadcast fading into a cold, hard clarity. She looked at the man on the screen—the man who had built an empire of blood and steel, who kept her locked behind reinforced glass because he believed the world was full of wolves.
And she realized something that terrified her even more than the federal charges: Dominic wasn't just defending her. He was escalating the war because he believed she was too weak to protect herself.
"He's not going to kill Julian," Eleanor said, her voice cutting through Miller's panic with chilling certainty.
Miller glared at her. "He has a federal informant tied to a chair on a live broadcast while his men burn millions of dollars in cash! What part of that looks like a bluff to you?"
"It’s not a bluff," Eleanor corrected calmly, lifting her hands so the metal cuffs clinked against the table. "It’s an invitation. Dominic wants you to storm the penthouse. He wants the federal government to walk right through his front doors so he can prove to everyone—including me—that no law, no court, and no badge can touch the people he claims to own."
Miller stared at her, the gears turning in his head as the political and tactical nightmare of the situation settled over him. If he sent a tactical team up to the Russo tower, it would turn into a bloodbath broadcast live to millions of citizens. If he didn't, the federal government's entire case against the syndicate—built on Julian's testimony—would evaporate in a cloud of public humiliation.
"You can stop him," Miller said, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. "You're the only person on this planet he answers to. Call him."
Eleanor looked down at the cold metal table, then up at the screen where Dominic stood like an absolute monarch among ruins. She thought of the soda dripping from her hair, the smug laughter of the influencers, the cold betrayal of her sister Clara, and the heavy golden cage Dominic had built around her life under the guise of protection.
She didn't want to be protected anymore. She wanted to finish what she had started.
"No," Eleanor said softly, a dark, resolute edge entering her voice.
Miller’s eyes widened in disbelief. "What do you mean, no? Your husband is about to trigger a war that will put you both behind bars for the rest of your natural lives!"
"My husband thinks he owns the chessboard," Eleanor stood up slowly, the heavy metal chair scraping against the floor. She looked straight into the federal agent's eyes, her posture entirely transformed from the shaken waitress of the night before. "He thinks I'm just a piece he has to defend. But he forgot who taught him how to read the ledger."

She leaned over the table toward him, her voice dropping to a low, commanding whisper that left Miller entirely frozen in place.
"Don't send your tactical teams to the penthouse, Agent Miller," Eleanor said, her dark eyes flashing with dangerous intent. "Open these doors, give me my phone, and let me call my husband. I'm going to handle this myself."
