Chapter 8 - The Legacy Ledger

The afternoon light shifted across the marble floor as Eleanor stared down at the faded corporate registry documents spread across the glass coffee table. The paper had a yellowish tint—old-style physical certificates digitized into the system only recently when Marcus had initiated a full-scale forensic audit of all legacy holdings linked to the Russo and Vance families.
"That's impossible," Eleanor said, her breath catching in her throat as her finger traced a signature at the bottom of the foundational trust document. "My father died with nothing. He spent his last five years drowning in medical debt after the family manufacturing plant went under. That's why Clara and I had to start from scratch."
"That's what you were led to believe, Mrs. Russo," Marcus said quietly, tapping a key on his tablet to pull up a secondary set of scanned financial ledgers. "When your father's estate went through probate ten years ago, the primary liquidation was handled by a boutique legal firm in Boston. A firm that was quietly bought out three months later by a holding company owned entirely by Julian Vance."
Dominic leaned over the table, his eyes scanning the corporate lineage lines with the cold, analytical focus of a man who spent his life deciphering hidden power structures. "Julian didn't just stumble into our lives or marry into your family by accident," Dominic said, his voice tightening into a low growl. "He’s been playing a very long, very patient game."
"He was the one who managed my father's bankruptcy filings," Eleanor whispered, the pieces of a puzzle she never knew existed suddenly snapping together with terrifying clarity. "Julian met Clara through those probate proceedings. We always thought it was a whirlwind romance—a wealthy corporate executive sweeping my older sister off her feet right when our family hit rock bottom."
"It wasn't a romance," Marcus added, sliding a bank statement forward. "It was an acquisition. Your father's plant wasn't failing because of bad market conditions, Mrs. Russo. It was deliberately shorted by a shell company that Julian controlled even back then, designed to force the family into bankruptcy so he could gain control of the underlying patent portfolio—patents related to secure maritime cargo tracking and logistics automation."
Eleanor stepped back from the table, her hands trembling slightly not from fear, but from a cold, rising fury that burned hotter than any anger she had felt at the influencers in The Gilded Spoon.
For ten years, she had carried the guilt of her family's financial collapse. She had worked odd jobs, saved every penny, and felt like a burden when she met Dominic—believing she came into his world with empty hands and a broken past. And all along, the man who had pretended to be the respectable, polished pillar of her sister's household was the architect of her family's destruction.
"He didn't just target us yesterday," Eleanor said, her voice shaking with quiet intensity. "He stole my father's life's work, bankrupted our family, and then used my sister to keep me isolated in a world where I'd never look too closely at corporate registries."
Dominic straightened up, his face hardening into an expression of absolute, unyielding resolve. He reached out, placing a heavy, steadying hand on Eleanor's shoulder.
"We're not just dismantling his shipping accounts, El," Dominic said softly, his voice cutting through the quiet room like a blade. "We're going to strip him of every single patent, every corporate asset, and every cent he stole from your family. Legally, publicly, and permanently."
"We can't do it just through Marcus's private audits," Eleanor said, turning to face Dominic, her eyes clearing of doubt. "If we use syndicate channels or private pressure, Julian will just cry victim to the federal prosecutors again. We need to do this where he thinks he's untouchable—at the upcoming quarterly board meeting of Vanguard Holdings tomorrow morning."
Marcus adjusted his glasses, a slow, appreciative smile touching the corners of his mouth. "The Vanguard board meeting is scheduled for 10:00 AM at their downtown headquarters. Every major institutional investor and federal maritime regulator will be in attendance. Julian is planning to announce his bid for the international shipping expansion—using capital he stole from your father's legacy."
Eleanor looked at Dominic, then down at her hands—the same hands that had carried plates in a mid-tier bistro under a false name just to feel like a real person. The disguise was gone. The waitress who took a cup of soda to the face was finished.

"Get my trench coat, Marcus," Eleanor said quietly. "We have a board meeting to crash."
