Chapter 45 - Midpoint Shift

The convoy of two black SUVs departed Ironwood at 3:10 AM, cutting through the backroads of Westchester County without headlights, running entirely on infrared night vision.

Alexander sat in the front passenger seat of the lead vehicle, coordinating our movements with a tactical team of six elite operators he had summoned from a secure base in New Jersey. Frank drove our vehicle, his eyes constantly scanning the tree-lined turns, while Elena and I sat in the rear, Leo secured in an armored infant carrier strapped between us.

"We have visual on the Greenwich perimeter," Alexander’s radio crackled with the voice of his scout team. *"The estate is locked down like a military compound. At least thirty private contractors on the grounds. Light armored vehicles stationed at the main gates. Thermal scanners active."*

"How do we get through the gates without triggering a massacre?" Frank asked, glancing in the rearview mirror.

"We don't breach the gates," I said, leaning forward. "My father designed the Greenwich estate thirty years ago. He was obsessed with privacy and paranoia long before he faked his death. There is an underground drainage aqueduct that runs from the Long Island Sound directly beneath the carriage house, leading straight into the secondary wine cellar."

"Is it sealed?" Alexander asked, turning his head.

"It’s biometric," I said. "Keyed to my father’s DNA... and to his direct descendants. That means my palm print opens the intake grate."

"It’s a choke point," Frank warned. "If he anticipated that route, he could have it wired with explosives."

"He didn't anticipate it," I said coldly. "Because in his mind, I am a broken, desperate girl who just survived an emergency C-section and is bringing her baby to beg for mercy. He expects me to roll up to the front gates in tears."

Ten minutes later, the SUVs pulled into a secluded cove along the coastline, half a mile south of the Davenport family estate. The smell of salt water and damp earth filled the air as Frank and Alexander pulled the infant carrier from the vehicle.

Alexander fitted a light Kevlar plate beneath my coat, cinching it carefully so it wouldn't compress my surgical incision. His hands were gentle, but his eyes were hard as flint.

"Once we enter that tunnel, there’s no turning back," he said softly, his forehead touching mine. "If Arthur realizes what you have in that locket, he will order his men to level the entire mansion to stop the audit."

"Then we make sure the audit is triggered before he realizes we’re inside," I replied.

We moved silently along the rocky shoreline toward the heavy iron grate embedded in the granite cliffside. The structure was covered in sea moss, rusted around the hinges, but the digital scanner panel beside it was shielded beneath a weatherproof bronze plate.

I stepped forward, pressing my right palm against the cold glass of the scanner.

A low, mechanical hum vibrated through the metal. A digitized voice, synthesized decades ago, chimed softly:

*Bloodline recognized. Heir Victoria Davenport. Access granted.*

The heavy iron bolts retracted with a hydraulic hiss, the heavy grate swinging outward into the darkness.

"Frank, take point," Alexander whispered, clicking on his infrared light. "Elena, stay between me and Victoria. If anything moves, get down."

We stepped into the damp, echoing darkness of the tunnel, the iron doors swinging shut behind us.

We advanced through the subterranean corridor for nearly fifteen minutes, our footsteps muffled by the damp concrete floor, until we reached the reinforced steel door that led into the estate’s lower sub-basement.

Elena pulled the micro-chip from her pocket, her breath hitching. "The master terminal is behind this door, inside the vault room. But Victoria... look at the network status."

She held up her handheld diagnostic tablet. The local network inside the mansion wasn't just active—it was broadcasting an encrypted live video feed to over forty sovereign delegates across Europe and Asia.

"Arthur isn't alone up there," Elena whispered in horror. "He convened an emergency midnight session of the Syndicate High Council. He’s about to formally announce the liquidation of your empire in front of the entire global board right now."
