Chapter 50 - The Unbroken Thread

Three days later, the penthouse overlooking Central Park was filled with the soft, gentle warmth of a crisp New York afternoon.

The chaotic siege at the medical center and the midnight raid in Greenwich felt like distant memories, though the newspaper headlines stacked on the marble kitchen island told the full, shocking story to the world:

*SYNDICATE EXPOSED: ARTHUR DAVENPORT ARRESTED IN MASSIVE GLOBAL CONSPIRACY.*

*VICTORIA DAVENPORT CONFIRMED AS SOLE CHAIRWOMAN OF MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR EMPIRE.*

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, holding Leo in my arms. He was dressed in a soft white cashmere onesie, looking up at me with large, curious blue eyes—the same brilliant blue as Alexander’s.

Alexander walked in from the master bedroom, dressed in a clean linen shirt and dark trousers, looking rested for the first time in months. The tension that had permanently lined his shoulders had finally melted away.

He wrapped his arms around both of us from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder, his warm breath tickling my neck.

"Dr. Morrison said you’re healing ahead of schedule," he murmured, kissing my temple. "Though she insists you aren't allowed back in the boardroom for at least four weeks."

"Elena is handling the day-to-day operations," I chuckled softly, resting my hand over his. "For the first time in ten years, Alexander, I don't feel the need to be in that building every morning. My entire world is in this room."

"Good," Alexander said, turning me gently to face him. "Because we have a lot of time to make up for. A whole lifetime."

He leaned down and kissed me, deep and full of promise, sealing the victory we had bled to achieve.

Just then, the private elevator chimed softly.

Elena stepped out into the foyer, carrying an unsealed courier envelope bearing the official stamp of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Her face, however, was not smiling. The relaxed ease she had worn for the last seventy-two hours was gone, replaced by a tense, guarded caution.

"Victoria," Elena said, stopping at the edge of the living room rug. "I’m sorry to interrupt. But the federal prosecutors just finished processing the encrypted hard drives recovered from Arthur’s private jet at Teterboro."

Alexander frowned, his protective instincts instantly snapping back into place. "Arthur is in solitary confinement at the federal metropolitan center. His bail was denied. What else could there possibly be?"

"Arthur wasn't the only one who signed off on the hit in Geneva three years ago, Alexander," Elena said, her voice dropping to a near whisper as she pulled a red-flagged document from the envelope.

Alexander stiffened. "What are you talking about?"

"When the car bomb went off in Geneva," Elena continued, looking directly at Alexander, "Arthur provided the logistical clearance. But he didn't fund the contract. The contract was paid through an offshore blind trust registered under an executive account at Davenport Holdings."

I turned cold, looking between Elena and Alexander. "That’s impossible. Only three people had access to that specific executive disbursement line: my father, myself... and my mother’s family trust."

"Not your mother's family, Victoria," Elena said, holding the paper out with a trembling hand. "The account belonged to a secondary signatory added five years ago. A man who was declared legally deceased during the 2018 corporate restructuring... but whose biometric signature authorized the transfer forty-eight hours before Alexander’s car exploded."

Alexander reached out, taking the paper from Elena’s hand. As his eyes scanned the name at the bottom of the wire authorization, his face went completely rigid, his knuckles turning white as he crumpled the edge of the page.

"Alexander?" I asked, a sudden dread tightening around my throat. "Who authorized the contract to kill you?"

May you like

Alexander slowly looked up from the paper, his eyes dark, filled with a storm that made the hair on my arms stand up.

"It wasn't your father, Victoria," Alexander whispered. "It was my brother. And according to this manifest... he’s alive, and he just landed at JFK."
