Chapter 8 - The Trust’s Shadow

The town car ride back to the Meridian Tower was spent in absolute silence, save for the low hum of the climate control system and the frantic tapping of my own fingers against my knee.
Ethan’s words hung in the air like a poisonous fog. A secret codicil. A secondary oversight board designed by Jonathan Vance. If such a document existed, it meant my entire legal foundation—the seventy-four percent controlling stake I had used to dismantle Ethan’s promotion and crush Jonathan’s takeover—was standing on a trapdoor.
Marcus stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of my executive office, reviewing a digital printout of the federal asset seizure manifest as I walked in. He didn't even have to turn around to know the news. The heavy atmosphere trailing behind me gave it away.
"You saw him," Marcus stated, his silver head turning slowly toward me.
"He claims there's a secondary codicil to my mother's will," I said, walking directly to my desk and dropping my bag onto the blotter. I sank into the leather chair, feeling the familiar, grounding weight of the desk beneath my hands. "Stored in the same safety deposit box at Federal Trust. A document that supposedly gives Jonathan’s prospective oversight board control if I use the company for personal vengeance."
Marcus crossed his arms, his face darkening into a scowl. "Ethan is a pathological liar, Evelyn. When a man is drowning, he will invent any lifeline to keep his head above water. Jonathan spent five years trying to pierce that trust without success. If a legal codicil like that existed, the state probate court would have flagged it during the initial estate settlement three years ago."
"Unless Jonathan suppressed the filing," I countered, looking up at him. "He was the family's legal counsel at the time. He drafted the original trust documents. If anyone knew how to slip a conditional amendment past the probate registry without triggering automated alerts, it was him."
Marcus walked over to the desk, pressing his palms flat against the dark wood. "Even if we assume for a second that Ethan isn't bluffing, look at the logistics. Ethan is locked in a federal holding cell. His assets are frozen, his mistress has abandoned him, and his family name is mud. If he has a physical key hidden somewhere in the city, it’s locked away in an apartment or a locker he hasn't accessed in weeks."
"Not an apartment," I said, a sudden, chilling realization dawning on me. "On our wedding day, Ethan didn't go to an apartment after the ceremony. He spent two hours at his mother’s Palm Beach estate before we flew out for our honeymoon. Eleanor keeps everything. If the key exists, it’s sitting inside Eleanor’s temporary suite at the Sapphire Heights penthouse right now."
Marcus straightened up instantly. "Eleanor is still packing out her suite under the supervision of building security. If we move fast—before she realizes Ethan has turned on the family—we can sweep the suite before she leaves for the airport."
I looked down at my swollen belly, feeling another firm kick from my daughter. The physical reality of my pregnancy made rushing into a confrontation with a bitter, vindictive woman like Eleanor feel daunting, but sitting back and waiting for Jonathan to detonate my legal foundation was entirely out of the question.

"No, Marcus," I said, standing up with deliberate resolve. "Don't send security. I'm going up there myself."
