Chapter 3 - The Hologram of a Marriage

Lilibeth’s confession poured out in ragged, broken fragments, her hands shaking so violently she could barely hold her tissue. She didn't just admit to the shell company; she mapped out an eighteen-month conspiracy orchestrated entirely by Marcus Vance.

According to Lilibeth, Marcus had approached Adrian nearly two years ago with a proposition. Adrian was drowning in high-interest gambling debts he had hidden from me, and Marcus had offered to clear them using corporate discretionary funds—provided Adrian acted as a compliant signature for internal audit bypasses. When Chloe entered the picture six months ago, she wasn't an accidental distraction; she was introduced by Marcus himself as a professional liability shield, designed to keep Adrian legally and financially tethered to a new household while the final, massive liquidation of my mother’s trust was executed.

"He promised us a penthouse downtown," Lilibeth sobbed, wiping her nose with a crumpled napkin. "Marcus said once the trust was cleared, you’d be legally liable for corporate negligence, and Adrian would file for divorce on the grounds of professional misconduct, taking half the residual equity of your mother's estate. We thought... we thought you were too smart to ever notice."

"You underestimated me because I was loyal," I said, my voice dangerously calm as I stopped the recording on my phone and pocketed the device. "You thought my dedication to our marriage meant blindness to my own accounts."

I turned on my heel and walked out of the suffocating house, the cool night air hitting my face like a refreshing shockwave. As I got back into my car, my phone buzzed with an encrypted text message from Katherine: “I checked the board registry for next month's meeting. Marcus has already tabled an emergency motion to review your fitness as Senior Vice President of Risk Management, citing ‘personal instability and domestic distraction.’”

The pieces were falling into place with terrifying precision. The entire setup in my living room earlier that evening—the smug family confrontation, the pregnant mistress, the rehearsed demands for me to leave my own house—hadn't been a spontaneous family revolt. It had been the final public act of a calculated corporate ambush. They expected me to break down in tears, sign the divorce papers under duress, abandon the house, and walk away from my assets like a wounded animal, leaving the field wide open for Marcus to loot the remaining accounts unopposed.

Instead, I had thrown them out on the street.

I drove straight to my office downtown, bypassing the security turnstiles using my executive badge before ascending to the executive floor. The corridors were silent, bathed in the dim blue glow of emergency lighting. I unlocked my private office, sat at my desk, and opened the master terminal.

If Marcus had used my internal compliance portal to authorize the Cayman Islands transfer, there would be a digital breadcrumb trail leading directly back to his secure terminal in the north wing.

I typed a sequence of forensic diagnostic scripts into the system, bypassing the standard user interface to access the root server logs. Lines of green cascading text flickered across the screen as the system digested months of digital activity.

Suddenly, a hidden directory appeared on the screen—a private partition labeled “VANCE_ESTATE_HOLDINGS.”

I clicked it open. Inside were not corporate audit logs, but personal legal documents, asset valuations, and a detailed registry of offshore accounts controlled jointly by Marcus Vance and... Chloe.

My breath hitched. Chloe wasn't just a twenty-three-year-old boutique owner or a pawn used by Adrian. Her real name was Chloe Vance-Sterling. She was Marcus’s niece—his estranged sister’s daughter—brought in specifically to execute the honey-trap operation against Adrian, who had been too narcissistic and foolish to ever check her background.

Marcus hadn't just been using Adrian to embezzle bank funds; he had been using Adrian as a patsy to frame me for corporate malfeasance while positioning his own family to absorb my mother’s multi-million-dollar estate through a web of fabricated marital debts.

The office door clicked open behind me.

I didn't turn around. I simply watched the reflection in the dark glass of my computer monitor as a tall, broad-shouldered figure stepped into the room, his footsteps falling silently on the thick carpet.

"Working late, Maria?" Marcus's smooth, oily voice drifted across the room. "I heard about the unpleasantness at your house tonight. It's truly tragic when a marriage falls apart so publicly."

I slowly turned my chair around to face him. Marcus stood near the door, his hands casually slipped into his tailored trousers, a faint, condescending smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

"You should have stayed home, Marcus," I said, my voice steady and cold. "Looking through stolen files in the middle of the night can be very bad for your career."

Marcus chuckled softly, taking a slow step forward. "Stolen files? Maria, you’re in no position to talk about stolen anything. By tomorrow morning, the board will receive a comprehensive audit report detailing unauthorized liquidations, corporate negligence, and financial conspiracy originating directly from your terminal. You're finished."

"Is that why you had your niece Chloe seduce my idiot husband?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "To help you launder the quarter-million dollars you stole from the logistics fund?"

Marcus’s polite smile faltered for a fraction of a second—just long enough for me to see the sudden panic flicker behind his eyes.
