Chapter 8 - Unraveling the Net

The silence in the boardroom after the audio recording finished playing was absolute. You could have heard a pin drop against the heavy wool carpet.
Arthur Sterling slowly removed his reading glasses, laying them flat on the mahogany table. He looked up, his weathered face hardening into a mask of pure institutional fury as he stared directly at Marcus.
"Mr. Vance," Arthur said, his voice low and dangerous. "Do you care to explain whose voice is on that recording?"
Marcus stood rigidly beside his chair, his hands gripping the edge of the table so tightly his knuckles turned stark white. The polished, untouchable executive veneer was completely gone, replaced by the panicked desperation of a cornered animal.
"It's... it's a deepfake," Marcus stammered, his voice losing its steady cadence. "In this day and age, audio files can be manipulated by anyone with basic machine-learning tools! You can't base an institutional decision on fabricated digital noise!"
"It's not a deepfake, Marcus," the federal investigator stepped forward, opening his badge folder and laying it flat on the table. "I am Agent Miller with the Federal Banking Commission's cyber-fraud division. We didn't rely on the audio alone. We traced the cryptographic hash of the transfer tokens back to a private, unregistered server registered under a shell corporation named Vance-Sterling Holdings—an entity wholly owned and operated by Marcus Vance and his niece, Chloe Sterling."
Agent Miller turned his gaze toward the board. "Furthermore, our agents executed a search warrant on Mr. Vance's corporate office thirty minutes ago. We recovered physical ledger books, signed transfer authorizations, and wire receipts confirming that over eight hundred thousand dollars in institutional funds have been systematically diverted over the last two years—not just through Mr. Adrian Vance, but across three separate internal departments under Mr. Marcus Vance's direct supervision."
Lilibeth broke down completely in the back of the room, burying her face in her hands as she wept openly. Her golden nephew, the pride of the family, had not only betrayed the bank—he had dragged her and her son down into the abyss with him.
Arthur Sterling didn't hesitate. He looked directly at the head of corporate security, who had been standing quietly near the entrance.
"Escort Mr. Vance from the building immediately," the chairman ordered, his voice echoing with finality. "Confiscate his security badges, lock down his terminal access, and turn him over to federal custody."
Two security officers stepped forward, flanking Marcus on either side. Marcus didn't struggle; he knew the game was over. As they led him past me toward the double doors, he stopped for a fraction of a second, turning his head to look at me with eyes full of venomous hatred.
"You think you've won, Maria," Marcus whispered bitterly, just loud enough for me to hear. "You think the board will ever let a woman with your domestic wreckage lead this institution? Look at your husband. Look at your life. You're completely alone."
I didn't blink. I met his gaze with absolute, unyielding calm.
"I was never alone, Marcus," I replied softly. "I just finally stopped carrying dead weight."
The doors closed behind him, sealing his fate.
An hour later, the emergency board meeting concluded with a unanimous vote: all charges against me were formally dismissed, my executive authority was fully restored with an immediate commendation for risk mitigation, and a comprehensive external audit was commissioned to clean house across the entire division.
Katherine and I walked out of the boardroom together, stepping into the private executive elevator as it descended toward the ground floor.
"Well," Katherine exhaled, leaning back against the glass wall of the elevator with a tired, victorious smile. "That went better than expected. You actually pulled it off."
"It's not over yet, Katherine," I said quietly, watching the floor numbers tick down. "Marcus is gone, but the fallout from his actions is still rippling outward. And there's still the matter of my mother's house."
"The feds are already investigating the fire as arson tied to Marcus's shell company assets," Katherine reassured me, placing a hand on my shoulder. "Insurance will cover the rebuild. But more importantly... what about Adrian?"
I looked down at my hands, feeling a strange, quiet sense of closure. "Adrian made his statement to the feds. He'll face legal consequences for his participation, but his cooperation will keep him out of prison. As for us... our marriage was over the moment he walked into my living room with his mistress and his mother."
The elevator doors slid open to the ground floor lobby. Stepping out into the bright morning sunlight, I saw someone waiting by the revolving glass doors.
May you like
It was Chloe.
She wasn't wearing her designer clothes or carrying her Prada bag anymore. She looked small, frightened, and desperate, standing alone in the bustling lobby. As she saw me step out of the elevator, she started walking directly toward me.
