Chapter 6 - The Weight of Ash

Adrian stumbled forward, catching himself on the edge of my mahogany desk. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and frantic, darting from my calm expression to the open laptop screen where the federal transfer log hovered like a digital ghost.
"What did you just say?" Adrian choked out, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the wood. "Marcus... Marcus told me he was just handling an administrative adjustment. He said if I signed the audit bypasses, we'd both get our severance package and a clean slate when the restructuring happened. He swore nobody would ever look at the lower tiers!"
"And you believed him?" I asked, my voice dangerously steady as I closed the laptop lid with a soft click. "You traded your entire life, your family, and your marriage to hitch your wagon to a man who views everyone around him as disposable equipment."
"He told me you were going to cut me off anyway!" Adrian shouted, his voice cracking with a mixture of terror and self-pity. "He knew about my debts, Maria. He knew about the online poker losses I tried to hide two years ago. He used them to trap me. Every time I tried to walk away, he increased the stakes, told me the compliance department was already looking into my signature, said the only way out was forward."
I looked at him—not with anger, but with a profound, chilling exhaustion. There was no fire left in him, only the hollow shell of a man who had thought he could outsmart a system he never truly understood.
"You chose your bed, Adrian," I said, walking around the desk to stand directly in front of him. "And right now, Marcus is burning down every bridge behind you. He didn't just target you. An hour ago, he had my mother's summer house upstate torched to the ground."
Adrian staggered back, his jaw dropping in sheer disbelief. "The... the lake house? No. Marcus wouldn't do that. That's a federal felony! That's arson!"
"Marcus is desperate, and desperate men make fatal errors," I replied, pulling my phone from my pocket and tapping the screen to display the secure transmission progress bar. "Which is why, ten minutes before you walked through this door, I uploaded the complete, unredacted master dossier containing every single audit override, shell-company ledger, and biometric signature tied to this embezzlement ring directly to the Federal Banking Commission and the board's ethics committee."
Adrian’s face drained of every remaining trace of color. He looked at me as if I had just signed his death warrant. "You sent it to federal regulators? Maria, no! If the feds step in, they won't just look at Marcus—they'll look at everyone whose signature appears on the routing slips. That includes me! I'll go to prison for ten years!"
"Then I suggest you start telling the truth to someone who can actually help you," a sharp, clear voice echoed from the doorway.
Katherine stepped into the office, holding a thick folder under her arm. She had obviously been waiting in the executive waiting room and had bypassed the door security using her legal override badge. Her expression was hard, her professional instincts fully engaged.
"Katherine," Adrian gasped, turning toward her like a drowning man grasping at a floating spar. "You have to help me. You know how Marcus operates. He manipulated all of us!"
Katherine didn't even look at him with sympathy. She walked straight past him, dropped her folder onto the desk, and turned her attention entirely to me. "The federal task force just acknowledged receipt of the data packet, Maria. They're moving to freeze Marcus's institutional assets by sunrise. But there's a complication. Marcus has already initiated an emergency board meeting for 7:00 A.M. He's claiming that you initiated the unauthorized liquidations and that you engineered the shell companies to frame him and Adrian."
I crossed my arms, a grim smile touching my lips. "He's trying a preemptive strike."
"Exactly," Katherine nodded, flipping open her folder. "He has Lilibeth prepared to sign an affidavit swearing that you coerced her into signing the initial boutique transfer under threat of cutting off Adrian's financial support. Without a counter-affidavit from someone inside the inner circle—someone who can prove Marcus orchestrated the entire conspiracy—the board might temporarily suspend you to protect the bank's public image while the investigation plays out."
Adrian stared at the floor, his chest heaving as the walls of his carefully constructed lies finally collapsed entirely around him.
"I'll do it," Adrian whispered, his voice trembling so badly the words barely registered.
Katherine and I both turned to look at him.

"I'll sign the counter-affidavit," Adrian repeated, raising his head, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. "I'll give the feds every single text message, every meeting log, every recorded phone call Marcus made to me over the last two years. I'll destroy him."
"It's not enough just to talk, Adrian," I said, my gaze locking onto his with razor-sharp intensity. "Tomorrow morning at seven o'clock, you're going to walk into that boardroom beside me, stand in front of the entire executive committee, and tell them the absolute truth, word for word."
