Chapter 10 - First Breath

The delivery room was a blur of bright surgical lights, quiet urgency, and the rhythmic beeping of medical monitors.
For forty-five minutes, I focused entirely on the steady voice of Dr. Alvarez coaching me through each contraction, while Ethan held my hand on one side and my father stroked my hair from the other. The ghost of Daniel Pierce, his forged deeds, his offshore accounts, and his decades-old vendetta vanished completely from my mind, driven out by the primal, overwhelming drive to bring my daughter safely into the world.
"One more big push, Claire!" Dr. Alvarez urged, her eyes bright with encouragement. "She’s right here. I can see her head."
I gripped Ethan’s hand so hard I thought I might break his fingers, pushed with every ounce of strength left in my body, and let out a long, shuddering breath as the sterile room suddenly filled with a sharp, beautiful, unmistakable cry.
"She’s here," Dr. Alvarez announced, lifting a tiny, squirming bundle wrapped in a warm pink blanket and placing her directly against my chest. "A healthy baby girl. Five pounds, eleven ounces."
Tears streamed down my cheeks as I looked down at the tiny face pressed against my skin. She had a full head of dark hair, a tiny button nose, and fists curled tightly near her chin. She was perfect. Unbroken. Untouched by the wreckage of the past twenty-four hours.
"Welcome to the world," I sobbed softly, kissing the top of her warm head as Ethan and my father openly wept beside the bed.
Two hours later, after the medical team had transferred us to a quiet recovery suite overlooking the glittering lights of downtown Chicago, the room was peaceful. My father and Ethan had gone down to the cafeteria to grab coffee, leaving me alone with my sleeping daughter nestled in the bassinet beside my bed.
The evening shadows lengthened across the white walls. My phone, sitting on the rolling tray, lit up silently with a text message from an unknown number.
I picked it up and opened the message. It was a digital photograph of a single document—a certified birth certificate amendment—alongside a brief note from Lucas, who was still wrapping up legal filings downtown.

Found this hidden in the back of Daniel’s safe deposit box, filed under a separate trust three weeks ago. It's not corporate fraud, Claire. It's an adoption waiver signed by Daniel for a second family he was secretly setting up in Milwaukee under an alias. There's someone else out there.
I stared at the screen as the dark silhouette of the Chicago skyline flickered against the windowpane, realizing that while the battle for Pierce Development Group was over, the full truth of the man I had married was only just beginning to unfold.
