Chapter 7 - Closed Airspace

The private aviation terminal at Midway Airport looked like a ghost town under the slate-gray Chicago sky, save for the flashing red and blue lights of three unmarked federal vehicles parked directly across the tarmac.
Inside the VIP holding lounge, the atmosphere was a volatile mix of panic and pent-up fury. Daniel Pierce stood by floor-to-ceiling glass windows that looked out over the grounded Gulfstream G650. His expensive Italian leather shoes clicked rhythmically against the polished marble floor as he paced back and forth, his tie discarded and his collar unbuttoned.
"What do you mean the tower grounded us?" Daniel barked, turning fiercely on the hangar manager who stood trembling near the door. "I wired the clearance fee fifty minutes ago! We have flight clearance to Zurich!"
"I don't know what to tell you, Mr. Pierce," the manager stammered, holding up a tablet showing the automated system freeze. "An emergency override came straight down from the corporate parent registry. The lease guarantee was dissolved by executive vote. Until the legal hold is cleared by the federal district court, nobody is taking this bird off the ground."
Vanessa sat slumped on a leather sofa nearby, her makeup slightly smeared, her fingers nervously twisting the fabric of the cream cashmere sweater I had bought her. The bravado she had worn in my hospital room had completely evaporated, replaced by a cold, sickly realization of what being tied to a sinking ship actually meant.
"Daniel," Vanessa said, her voice tight and trembling. "Your lawyers said the injunction wouldn't hit the secondary accounts until this afternoon. How did the corporate secretary override the hangar lease? Who authorized that?"
Daniel stopped pacing, his face darkening with a vicious, ugly realization. "Claire," he hissed, the name sounding like a curse. "It had to be Claire. She’s the only other person with root administrator credentials on the holding registry."
"Claire is in a hospital bed with preeclampsia," Vanessa snapped back, standing up. "She was having contractions last night! How could she—"
"Because she’s not as stupid as you let me believe she was!" Daniel roared, turning on her with a sudden, feral intensity that made Vanessa flinch backward. "You told me she was isolated, dependent, and entirely manageable! You swore she wouldn't look twice at the corporate filings as long as we kept her supplied with baby showers and cashmere!"
Before Vanessa could fire back, the heavy glass doors of the private lounge slid open with a sharp hiss.
Three federal marshals in tactical windbreakers stepped into the room, flanked by Ethan and Lucas. Ethan’s height and commanding presence filled the doorway instantly, his eyes locked onto Daniel with a cold, predatory focus.
"End of the line, Daniel," Ethan said, his voice echoing off the marble walls.
Daniel straightened his jacket, attempting to reclaim a shred of his corporate veneer, though his hands were visibly shaking. "Agent, this is a private facility. These individuals are trespassing on corporate property, and I demand—"
"You demand nothing, Pierce," one of the marshals interrupted, stepping forward and flashing a federal warrant. "Daniel Pierce, you are being detained under federal indictment for wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate asset embezzlement. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
"This is a mistake! A civil dispute disguised as a criminal matter!" Daniel shouted, trying to back away toward the tarmac exit. "My attorneys—"
"Your attorneys are currently sitting in a federal courtroom downtown listening to Judge Callahan deny your emergency stay," Lucas said coldly, stepping up beside the marshal. "And as for your corporate empire? It’s officially in receivership."
As the cuffs clicked onto Daniel’s wrists, his eyes darted past the marshals and landed squarely on Vanessa. The look of utter betrayal and calculating survival on Daniel's face was instantaneous. He didn't look at her with love or remorse; he looked at her like a liability he was ready to discard.
"Tell them," Daniel sneered, nodding toward Vanessa as the marshals began to pull him toward the exit. "Tell them how eager you were to help me siphon the subsidiary accounts into your personal LLC. You wanted the money just as badly as I did, Vanessa!"
May you like
Vanessa’s face drained of every trace of color. She stared at Daniel in horror as he was hauled away, realizing too late that the man she had betrayed her sister for would throw her under the bus without a second thought.
