Chapter 8 - The Price of Ambition

The private lounge fell into a heavy, suffocating silence after the marshals led Daniel away. The ambient hum of the airport runway seemed miles away.

Vanessa stood frozen near the leather sofa, her arms wrapped tightly around herself as if trying to hold her shattered pieces together. She wouldn't look at Ethan or Lucas. When she finally raised her eyes, they met mine—though I wasn't there in person; my tablet was resting on a rolling tray beside Ethan, broadcasting a live FaceTime feed directly from my hospital room.

On the screen, my face appeared larger than life on the lounge's wall-mounted digital display.

"Happy with yourself, Claire?" Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking with a bitter mixture of humiliation and defensive spite. "You got your revenge. You brought down the great Daniel Pierce. You proved to everyone that you were right and I was pathetic."

"I didn't do this for revenge, Vanessa," I said from the hospital bed, my voice steady and unyielding. "I did it because you and Daniel tried to steal my daughter's future. You thought you could rewrite our family history, take everything Dad built, and leave me standing in a hospital hallway while you looted the wreckage."

"You don't know what it's like!" Vanessa suddenly flared, stepping toward the camera screen with tears streaming down her face. "You never had to claw your way out of anything! Dad treated you like a golden idol and me like an afterthought! When Daniel looked at me, he didn't see a charity case. He saw an equal!"

"An equal?" Ethan stepped into the frame, blocking her view of the screen. His voice was lower, harder than I had ever heard it. "Is that what you call being a disposable pawn in his offshore tax scam? Did you even read the subsidiary ledgers Marcus pulled? Daniel didn't register that LLC in your name because he respected you, Vanessa. He registered it in your name so that when the federal audit hit, all the wire fraud indictments would point straight to you, while he kept the primary holdings clean."

Vanessa staggered backward as if she had been physically struck. "That's... that's a lie. He promised me we were starting over in Zurich."

"Daniel doesn't start over with partners, Vanessa," Lucas said quietly, walking over and tossing a thick folder onto the coffee table in front of her. "He starts over with victims. And right now, the federal prosecutor’s office is reviewing those exact wire transfers. Unless you start cooperating and handing over every password, passcode, and shell-company ledger Daniel gave you, you're going to be sharing a federal holding cell with him by nightfall."

Vanessa looked down at the folder, then up at the screen where my face watched her with a heavy, sorrowful exhaustion. The sisterly bond we had shared—the late-night phone calls, the shared secrets, the clothes we traded when we were younger—felt like a lifetime ago, incinerated by greed and petty bitterness.

"I didn't know about the fraud," Vanessa whimpered, sinking down onto the sofa and burying her face in her hands. "I swear to God, I just thought we were beating him at his own game."

"You weren't beating him, Vanessa," I said softly, my voice carrying across the empty room. "You were just helping him dig a deeper hole."

Ethan turned toward the camera, nodding to me. "We're wrapping up here, Claire. The marshals are securing the physical evidence. I'm coming back to the hospital right now."

"Hurry," I said, a sudden, sharp pang of tightness gripping my abdomen. "Dr. Alvarez is finishing her morning rounds, and... I think my contractions are starting again."
