Chapter 10 - The Federal Intervention

Three unmarked federal vehicles screeched to a halt along the curb outside Mercer & Sterling Holdings, their emergency lights painting the rainy Cincinnati street in flashing crimson and azure.
Before the security guard could even reach the lobby doors, a tall man in a charcoal suit pushed through the revolving entrance using a master electronic keycard, flanked by two armed deputy U.S. marshals.
The glass doors slid open.
The man stepped out onto the sidewalk, his sharp eyes locking directly onto Grandpa Elias. He held up a leather badge case bearing the golden seal of the federal financial crimes task force.
"Mr. Elias?" the federal agent asked, his voice crisp and authoritative.
"I'm Elias," Grandpa replied, standing tall and shielding me slightly behind his shoulder. "And you're right on time, Agent Vance."
Agent Vance gave a respectful nod, then turned his gaze toward my father, who was still staring in shock. "Mr. Daniel Mercer? We’ve been tracking Richard Mercer’s offshore asset transfers for the past seventy-two hours. Your brother didn't just help your wife siphon joint savings—he was running a multi-state mortgage fraud ring using forged deeds across three counties, including your primary residence."
Daniel’s jaw dropped. "My... my house?"
"Your house was illegally signed over to a shell company controlled by Richard three days ago using a fraudulent power of attorney," Agent Vance explained, pulling a thick packet of sealed documents from his leather briefcase. "Which means the quitclaim deed your brother threatened you with is not only void—it’s federal evidence of wire fraud and identity theft."
Agent Vance motioned to the two marshals behind him. "We have an active warrant to secure all digital servers, hard drives, and physical files on the executive floor of this building. We’d appreciate your assistance in identifying which office belongs to Richard Mercer."
Daniel looked from the federal agent to Grandpa Elias, a slow, disbelieving wave of relief washing over his exhausted face. He wiped his eyes with the back of his sleeve, squared his shoulders, and stepped forward.
"His office is on the thirty-fifth floor," Daniel said, his voice steady and hard as steel for the first time in years. "Let's go show him what a real audit looks like."
As the heavy glass doors slid open to let us inside the building, I looked back out at the city streets as the first rays of dawn began to pierce the heavy morning fog.

The nightmare wasn't completely over, but for the first time in months, I knew the shadows were finally running out of places to hide.
Agent Vance held the elevator door open for us, and together, my father, my grandfather, and I stepped inside.
