Chapter 7 - The Brother's Shadow

"No," Daniel whispered, shaking his head frantically as if he could erase the ink by sheer force of will. "That's... that's impossible. Richard lives in Cincinnati. He hasn't spoken to us in three years."

I leaned forward from my chair, my eyes darting to the paper on the table. Written in Grandpa’s sharp, capital letters was a single name: Richard Mercer.

My uncle Richard. My father’s younger brother.

"The clerk said the primary corporate account used to launder the household funds and hide the asset transfers was co-signed under a power of attorney executed six months ago," Grandpa explained, his voice hard as iron. "And the signature on that power of attorney wasn't yours, Daniel. It was notarized in Cincinnati under your brother's corporate seal."

Daniel gripped the edge of the kitchen counter, his knuckles turning white. "Richard... Richard is a senior partner at a commercial real estate firm. He makes three times what I make. Why would he help Miranda bleed my family dry?"

"Because your brother has never forgiven you for staying in Dayton and working the rail yards instead of joining him in corporate law," Grandpa said bluntly. "And more importantly, Richard has been buying up distressed commercial properties across the state line—properties that were quietly foreclosed on by the exact same bank where Miranda opened her hidden accounts."

The pieces began snapping together in my mind with terrifying clarity. The bruises, the control, the constant gaslighting—Miranda hadn't just been an abusive stepmother acting out of petty cruelty. She had been an operative planted in our home, executing a calculated financial siphon designed to strip my father of everything he owned.

"She wasn't just hiding money," I whispered, the words slipping out before I could stop them. "She was buying our house out from under us."

Daniel snapped his head toward me, his eyes wide with horror. "What did you say?"

"Think about it, Dad," I said, my voice shaking but gathering resolve. "Every time you talked about refinancing the mortgage or selling the property to move closer to Grandpa, Miranda threw a fit. She told you the market was bad, that your credit was too tight. She was managing the books because she didn't want you looking at the title deeds."

Daniel stared at me, his mouth opening slightly as the horrifying reality set in. He grabbed his car keys off the hook by the back door with trembling fingers.

"Where are you going?" Grandpa demanded, stepping in front of the doorway.

"To Cincinnati," Daniel snarled, his eyes flashing with a sudden, dangerous fury. "I'm going to rip my brother's office apart and find out what kind of game they've been playing."

May you like

"You aren't going anywhere alone, Daniel," Grandpa said, his voice lowering into a command that brook no argument. He reached behind the coat rack and pulled down his heavy canvas hunting jacket. "We go together. And we bring the sheriff's files with us."
