Chapter 5 - The Untold Audit

By late afternoon, the police cruiser had long since departed, taking Miranda to the precinct for booking and interrogation. The house on Grandpa’s property was quiet, save for the rhythmic ticking of the antique clock in the hallway.
Daniel sat on the wooden bench outside the kitchen, staring down at his hands, completely broken.
"The police searched the master bedroom while securing the house," Daniel said, his voice hollow and cracked. "They found... they found things, Chloe. Financial records. Bank statements from accounts I didn't even know existed."
Grandpa Elias leaned against the kitchen counter, crossing his arms. "What kind of records?"
"Savings accounts in Miranda’s maiden name," Daniel answered, rubbing his face with his palms. "She’s been siphoning money from our joint business savings for over a year—thousands of dollars. She told me the accounts were depleted because of medical debt and inflation, but... but the paper trail shows she was funneling it all to an offshore LLC."
I sat quietly at the kitchen table, watching my father grapple with the reality that the woman he had married was not only an abuser, but a financial predator who had bled him dry behind his back.
It was a staggering revelation, but as I sat there listening to his confession, a cold, sharp realization settled into my chest.
Miranda hadn't acted alone.
During the months she was managing the household finances while my father worked nights, she had frequently bragged about how easy it was to manipulate corporate auditing logs because of her connections at the local hospital administration.
My father looked up, his bloodshot eyes locking onto mine with desperate pleading. "Chloe... how long did you know?"
"I didn't know about the money, Dad," I said quietly. "I only knew what she did to me."
Daniel swallowed hard, standing up slowly and walking over toward the kitchen table. He reached out a trembling hand as if he wanted to touch my shoulder, then stopped, realizing he didn't have the right.
"I'm going to fix this," Daniel whispered, his voice hardening with sudden, bitter resolve. "I'm going to tear her life apart the way she tore ours apart. Every asset, every lie she ever told... I’m going to expose all of it."
Grandpa Elias watched my father with a skeptical, unwavering gaze. "You think she worked alone, Daniel? A woman like Miranda doesn't build an offshore shell company on a nurse's salary without help."
Daniel frowned. "What do you mean?"
Before Grandpa could answer, the landline phone mounted on the kitchen wall let out a shrill, piercing ring.

We all froze.
The clock ticked loudly in the silence. The caller ID on the small digital screen flashed a restricted number from the downtown federal courthouse.
