Chapter 3 - The Blood on the Pavement

Out in the yard, the heavy silence broke into a chaotic wave of confusion as three black tactical SUVs tore through the automated outer gates, their tires screeching against the asphalt. Armed federal marshals spilled out in full riot gear, their assault rifles raised, forming a rigid defensive perimeter around Cell Block C.

Razor stepped back another full pace, her bravado evaporating under the cold, overwhelming weight of the armed agents swarming the yard.

"What is this?" Razor muttered, looking around wildly at her accomplices. "Who the hell is she?"

Martha remained kneeling on the concrete. She reached down slowly, her fingers brushing against the dust, and picked up the small, creased photograph that had been kicked away from her. It wasn't a picture of grandchildren or a vacation spot. It was a black-and-white photograph of the federal penitentiary's original blueprint, signed by the founding director in 1974—and bearing the signature of Martha’s late husband, the man who had been systematically framed and murdered within these very walls.

"You wanted to know why I was here," Martha said softly, lifting her head to look directly at Razor. Her deaf act, her slow movements, her fragile posture—all of it dissolved into thin air, replaced by the commanding presence of a woman who held the keys to the kingdom. "I came to collect rent."

Before Razor could muster a threat, a federal marshal captain pushed through the armed cordon, stepping directly between them. He didn't look at Razor. He dropped immediately to one knee beside Martha, his expression a mix of profound respect and urgent anxiety.

"Director Vance," the captain said, his voice tight. "We breached the gates ten minutes ahead of schedule. Are you injured?"

The entire yard went dead silent. Every inmate, every guard, and every inmate boss stopped moving.

Director Vance?

Razor’s face turned the color of ash. She stumbled backward, tripping over her own boots and hitting the chain-link fence with a metallic clang.
