Chapter 9 - The Airfield Gambit

The twin-engine federal transport helicopter sat idling on the concrete tarmac of the Blackwood airstrip, its rotor blades whipping the damp autumn air into a furious gale. Rain began to mist across the gray sky as Martha and Captain Hayes ducked beneath the spinning blades, climbing quickly into the cramped cabin.

Inside, a secure satellite communications terminal glowed green. Chloe’s face appeared on the small screen via an encrypted link from Minneapolis.

"Director! Can you hear me?" Chloe’s voice shouted over the roar of the turbine engines.

"Loud and clear, Chloe," Martha shouted back, strapping herself into the jump seat as the helicopter lifted off the ground with a sudden, bone-jarring vertical thrust. "What’s happening at the district courthouse?"

"Judge Vance just took the bench!" Chloe yelled, her image shaking as she held her tablet in the vault chamber. "He’s moving to fast-track the injunction. He’s claiming the Minneapolis vault search violated interstate jurisdiction. If he signs the order, all our digital evidence is wiped from the federal database within the hour!"

"Not if the physical affidavit is already in transit," Martha replied calmly, tapping the waterproof leather pouch secured inside her inner pocket. "Tell our legal team in D.C. to file a writ of mandamus directly to the Supreme Court clerk’s chambers. Cite emergency constitutional override under Section Four."

"Doing it right now!" Chloe shouted before the satellite connection dissolved into a cloud of static interference.

The helicopter banked sharply, climbing above the jagged coastline of Southern California as it pointed its nose eastward toward the red-eye flight corridor out of San Diego. Below them, the sprawling rooftops of the city looked deceptively peaceful, unaware of the seismic shockwave about to hit its legal and financial establishment.

Martha closed her eyes for a brief moment, letting out a slow, steady breath. Seventy-eight days of cold concrete, feigned deafness, and calculated humiliation had led to this exact second. She could picture Beatrice sitting in the back of a police cruiser, and Lucas staring at the iron bars of his holding cell. But the architects of the nightmare—the ones who wore robes and signed warrants with golden pens—were still sitting comfortably in their mahogany chambers.
