Chapter 3 - The Vanguard Arrival

The name Vanguard sent a cold shiver straight down my spine. Even down in the secure bowels of the East Wing kitchen, everyone knew what Vanguard Holdings represented: a ruthless, hyper-aggressive corporate conglomerate buying up municipal infrastructure, intimidating local businesses, and waging a quiet, vicious shadow war against Vincent Castalano’s shipping empire.
“Keep Clara and the girl in the secure kitchen wing,” Renzo snapped, his voice dropping into a lethal, command-ready register. He reached under his tailored jacket, pulling a suppressed automatic pistol from his shoulder holster and checking the slide with practiced ease. “If anyone else enters this corridor who doesn't have a Castalano biometric stamp, you shoot on sight.”
“Renzo, what’s happening?” I asked, sliding off my stool and stepping in front of Mia to shield her from the sudden shift in the room. “Is it a raid?”
“It’s a corporate visit, Clara style,” Renzo said grimly, turning toward the heavy exit. “Stay put. Do not open this door for anyone except me.”
The door slammed shut, locking automatically with a heavy, magnetic click.
Inside the kitchen, the private chef froze, his knife hovering over a wooden cutting board as the distant, muffled rumble of heavy vehicle engines echoed through the stone foundations above. Mia looked up from her plate of strawberries, her wide brown eyes filled with sudden apprehension.
“Mommy, are we playing hide-and-seek?” she whispered, tugging on the hem of my blouse.
“Kind of, sweetie,” I forced a shaky smile, lifting her up into my arms and moving toward the reinforced pantry in the back of the kitchen—a windowless brick alcove designed for heavy food storage, but sturdy enough to double as a makeshift panic room. “Let’s just sit in here for a little bit and look at your picture book, okay?”
I locked us inside the pantry, the heavy steel door muffling the ambient sounds of the estate. But even through the thick walls, I could hear the faint, rumbling vibrations of shouting voices filtering down from the grand foyer above.

Things were escalating fast. And Vincent Castalano was about to receive uninvited guests.
