Chapter 4 - Eavesdropping on the Enemy

Inside the dark, cool confines of the pantry, illuminated only by the thin sliver of light coming through the reinforced mesh of the ventilation grate, I held Mia close against my chest. She was quiet now, sensing the thick tension radiating off me.
I pressed my ear directly against the cold brick wall that ran parallel to the grand staircase’s vertical utility shaft. If the acoustics of the old stone mansion held true, sound from the primary landing would travel straight down through the hollow metal conduit.
“...you’re trespassing on private maritime jurisdiction, Sterling,” Vincent’s voice echoed down the shaft, cold, sharp, and dripping with thinly veiled violence. “And you brought your little corporate attack dogs onto my property without an appointment.”
A second voice answered—smooth, arrogant, and sickeningly familiar from financial news profiles: David Sterling, the general counsel for Vanguard Holdings.
“Save the dramatic posturing, Castalano,” Sterling laughed lightly, the sound like glass sliding across concrete. “We both know your shipping monopoly in the North Atlantic is hanging by a thread. The federal maritime commission is about to revoke your docking licenses by Friday morning. We’re simply here to offer a buyout before your empire collapses under its own weight.”
“A buyout,” Vincent repeated, and even through the metal conduit, I could hear the lethal amusement in his tone. “From a man who couldn't balance a municipal ledger without bribing local zoning clerks in Indiana.”
A heavy thud echoed down the shaft—someone slamming a fist against an oak table or a wall.
“You think you’re untouchable behind these stone walls, Vincent,” Sterling hissed, losing his cool veneer. “You and your little ghost network are finished. Hand over the Maple Grove transit routing codes, or watch your entire operation get dismantled piece by piece starting tonight.”

“You threatening my house, David?” Vincent’s voice dropped an octave, turning into a terrifyingly soft whisper that made even my blood run cold. “Because the last man who threatened my house ended up feeding fish off the coast of Maine.”
