Chapter 9 - The Encrypted Intercept

Vincent’s posture shifted in a microsecond. The relaxed, almost domestic demeanor vanished, replaced instantly by the lethal focus of a commander in a war zone. He stood up from the table without a word, walking briskly across the suite toward the wall-mounted console.

He tapped a sequence of keys on the tactical keypad, routing the encrypted audio feed through the room’s primary speakers.

“Boss,” Renzo’s voice crackled through the speaker, tight and laced with tension. “We just intercepted an encrypted burst transmission originating from a satellite relay station in Chicago. It’s routed directly to a Vanguard subsidiary shell company in Delaware.”

“Play the audio intercept, Renzo,” Vincent ordered, his voice dropping into a low, commanding register.

A moment of static hissed from the speakers, followed by the recognizable, arrogant voice of David Sterling speaking to an unidentified recipient:

“...the Castalano estate is locked down tighter than a federal vault, but we’ve got a secondary leverage point,” Sterling’s voice echoed through our quiet suite. “The administrative assistant—Clara Evans. Her sister is a registered nurse working the night shift at Mercy General in downtown Chicago. If Vincent won’t hand over the Maple Grove routing codes voluntarily, we pick up the nurse on her way out of the hospital shift tomorrow morning.”

My breath caught in my throat. My blood turned to ice water.

“Sarah,” I gasped, clutching the edge of the table so hard my knuckles turned white. “They’re going after my sister Sarah.”

Vincent slammed his hand down onto the console’s kill-switch, cutting off the audio feed instantly. The silence in the suite returned with crushing weight, but the damage was already done. David Sterling had just declared war on my family.

“Renzo,” Vincent barked into the open mic, his voice vibrating with controlled, lethal fury. “Double the perimeter security on this estate immediately. And dispatch a tactical extraction team to Mercy General Hospital in Chicago within the hour.”

“Wait!” I cried out, stepping away from the table and rushing toward the console. I looked up at Vincent, tears of pure terror and rage burning in my eyes. “An extraction team? Vincent—Mr. Castalano—if Vanguard’s hit squad is already planning to grab her during her shift change, a standard extraction won't be enough. They’ll use local mercenaries, fake police units, anything!”

Vincent turned his dark, intense gaze toward me, studying my face for three agonizing seconds. Then, slowly, he reached out and placed a firm, heavy hand on my shoulder.

“Your sister will not be touched, Clara,” Vincent said, his voice carrying an absolute, terrifying conviction. “Because tonight, we aren't waiting for David Sterling to make his move. We are going to burn his intelligence network to the ground before she even clocks out.”
