Chapter 4 - The Federal Ultimatum

“You knew he was using my house—using my family—as a staging ground?” I stepped right up to Agent Vance, ignoring the federal badge inches from my chest. “My four-year-old daughter was left alone for three days while he ran his little spy ring, and you were treating it like a live-fire training exercise?”
Agent Vance’s expression hardened, any pretense of warmth vanishing from his eyes.
“Major, your husband isn't a mastermind. He’s a gambler who accumulated massive debts with international brokers,” Vance said, stepping past me into the living room. “When he couldn't pay, they offered him a way out: access to your secure network tokens, your deployment schedules, and your unit's communication frequencies. He sold you out for a fraction of what those files are worth.”
Officer Bell lowered his weapon slowly, shaking his head in disgust. “And the cruise?”
“A decoy,” Vance said, pulling a tablet from his briefcase and tapping the screen. “The ship left port, but Derek slipped off at the first port of call in the Bahamas forty-eight hours ago. He’s not on that ship anymore. In fact, our trackers show his personal phone just pinged a local relay tower less than ten miles from here.”
My breath hitched. “He’s back.”
“He’s running,” Vance corrected. “And he’s trying to retrieve whatever is on that thumb drive you just slipped into your pocket.”
I instinctively touched the pocket where I had hidden the USB drive from the Pelican case. Vance’s eyes flicked to my hand, a knowing smile touching his lips.
“Hand it over, Major,” Vance said, extending his hand. “That’s classified evidence. Let the Bureau handle it.”
“Like you handled the last six months?” I challenged, taking a step back. “No. My daughter nearly died because of this operation. If Derek is within ten miles of this house, I’m going to find him myself.”
Before Vance could respond, the overhead lights in the house flickered violently and died. The refrigerator hum cut out. Total darkness swallowed the living room, save for the blue glow of Vance’s tablet screen.

From the front porch came a sound that made every muscle in my body lock up: the slow, deliberate scrape of a key turning in the front door lock.
