Chapter 9 - The Darkened Corridor

“What the hell was that?” Agent Vance shouted over the blaring klaxons, drawing his sidearm as the overhead fluorescent lights flickered and died, plunging the briefing room into the crimson glare of the emergency backup strobes.
“Sector Four is the primary power substation and the medical wing access corridor!” Colonel Vance roared, grabbing an assault rifle from the armory rack beside the door. “They didn't just tail us—they tracked us straight here and hit the infrastructure!”
My stomach dropped into a bottomless void. Lily.
“Lily’s in the medical wing,” I gasped, spinning toward the door.
“Major, wait!” Agent Vance grabbed my shoulder, but I slammed my elbow back into his chest with enough force to break his grip, sprinting out into the concrete corridor before he could recover.
The hallway was choked with acrid grey smoke rolling from a blown conduit down the hall. Sparks showered from dangling wires, illuminating the chaos of armed military police scrambling into defensive positions behind concrete pillars.
“Hold your fire! Major Nolan coming through!” I yelled, keeping low as I sprinted toward the heavy steel blast door leading to the secure medical ward.
As I rounded the corner, two military guards assigned to Lily’s room were slumped against the wall, unconscious or worse. The heavy steel door to Lily’s recovery room had been blown inward from the hinges, the jagged metal frame smoking.
My breath caught in my throat. I raised my weapon, sweeping the barrel into the ruined doorway.
“Lily?” I called out, my voice cracking with absolute terror.
The room was empty. The hospital bed was tossed aside, the white sheets stained with a smear of fresh blood. But sitting on the metal bedside table was a small, glowing red tactical tracker—pulsing with a steady, rhythmic beep.

Footsteps echoed sharply from the ventilation shaft above, accompanied by the muffled sound of childish crying.
