Chapter 8 - The Decryption Matrix

The briefing room of the black site smelled of stale coffee and ozone from banks of humming mainframe servers. On the large wall-mounted monitor, the contents of the thumb drive I pulled from Derek’s stash were being decrypted in real-time by a pair of military cyber-analysts.

“It’s heavily encrypted using a proprietary multi-layer protocol,” one of the analysts reported, his fingers flying across his keyboard. “We’re bypassing the firewall now… decrypting layer three… almost there, sir.”

I stood behind the console, my arms crossed tightly over my chest, watching the progress bar crawl toward one hundred percent. Colonel Vance paced behind me, while Agent Vance conferred quietly with a pair of tactical commanders near the door.

“Colonel,” I said, breaking the silence. “Derek didn't build this network alone. The financial records showed wire transfers originating from a shell corporation tied to defense contractors in the private sector.”

“We know, Hannah,” Colonel Vance said heavily, stopping his pacing to look at me. “And that’s what makes this investigation terrifying. It’s not just a rogue ring of criminals. It reaches deep into our own logistics chain. Someone high up authorized the supply routes your unit managed during deployment.”

“Which means,” I added, my eyes narrowing, “the sniper who killed Derek wasn't just an outside hitman. They had internal clearance.”

“Bingo,” the lead analyst yelled suddenly, slamming his hand on the desk. “Firewall breached! We’re inside the root directory.”

The monitor flickered, replacing the loading bar with a sprawling directory of encrypted video files, audio logs, and transfer ledgers.

“Pull up the audio logs from thirty days ago,” I instructed, stepping closer to the glass.

The analyst clicked on a file labeled Nolan_D_Log_04. A progress bar appeared, and a wave audio track began to render. The analyst hit play.

Static hissed across the speakers, followed by the sound of heavy rain hitting a window. Then, a voice spoke. It wasn't Derek. It was a smooth, cultivated voice—a man speaking with a faint, unfamiliar cadence.

“Ensure the intelligence package regarding the Chesapeake depot is uploaded by Friday, Mr. Nolan. If your wife so much as opens a single file on her return, the girl goes missing permanently. Do we understand each other?”

Derek’s voice answered, trembling: “Yes. Just… just leave the money in the offshore account.”

The recording cut out.

Colonel Vance’s face went rigid. “Recognize that voice, Major?”

Before I could answer, the entire bunker shuddered. A deafening, muffled explosion echoed from somewhere deep within the lower levels, followed immediately by the wail of emergency sirens and flashing red security strobes.

“Warning,” a computerized voice boomed overhead. “External security breach. Sector Four compromised. Lockdown initiated.”
