Chapter 10 - The Master Key

As the elderly woman walked out of the boutique carrying her boxed silk scarf, escorted respectfully to the mall concourse by one of the guards, Julian stood rigidly beside Gillian, waiting for the axe to fall.
Clara turned back toward them, her expression dropping all warmth as she stepped back into the role of corporate executive.
“Gillian,” Clara said quietly. “Your badge is deactivated. Clean out your locker within thirty minutes, or security will escort you out. Julian?”
“Yes, Ms. Vance?” Julian answered instantly.
“Conduct a complete cultural and compliance audit of every Valerie Vane location in this mall by Monday morning. If I find one more employee treating customers like trespassers based on their clothing or age, I won't just replace the store manager—I’ll replace the regional director.”
“Understood, Ms. Vance. Completely understood,” Julian stammered, nodding so fast his neck seemed to ache.
Clara adjusted her gray sweater one last time, turned her back on the terrified management team, and began walking toward the main exit of the south wing.
Her phone buzzed again. This time, it wasn't a security alert or an audit notification. It was a calendar reminder for a board meeting scheduled for Monday morning at corporate headquarters in Manhattan—a meeting where she was slated to present the nationwide retail restructuring plan.

As she pushed open the glass doors and stepped out into the bustling mall concourse, she realized her unannounced store visits had achieved exactly what she set out to do. She had found the rot hidden beneath the polished veneer of corporate success.
And as she hailed a town car waiting at the curb, she knew the real work was only just beginning.
