Chapter 9 - The Regional Director’s Arrival

Within four minutes, the boutique’s glass doors swung open again, and a panicked man in a tailored charcoal suit rushed onto the sales floor. It was Julian Vance—no relation to Clara, but the regional vice president overseeing Valerie Vane’s southwestern district. He had received an emergency automated flag from the corporate security node the moment Clara swiped her master credential at the entrance terminal.
“Ms. Vance!” Julian panted, sliding to a halt in front of her, his forehead glistening with nervous sweat. “I was at the regional headquarters across town—security told me you triggered an administrative override in the south wing boutique—”
“Julian,” Clara said, turning to face him as Gillian scurried back onto the floor carrying a velvet tray with three folded silk scarves.
Julian winced at the coldness in her tone. “Yes, ma’am? What happened? Did someone violate protocol?”
“Someone violated human decency,” Clara said, motioning toward Gillian, who stood holding the velvet tray with shaking hands. “Gillian here decided that an elderly customer inquiring about a birthday gift didn't fit the brand aesthetic, so she had security block her from entering the store.”
Julian’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson. He whipped his head around to glare at Gillian. “Are you out of your absolute mind? You turned away a retail customer? Do you have any idea who signs your paycheck?”
“She didn't just turn her away, Julian,” Clara continued, her voice steady and relentless. “She patronized her, mocked her appearance, and violated corporate non-discrimination policies that every single employee signs on day one.”
Julian turned back to Clara, his hands clasped together in desperate supplication. “Ms. Vance, please. I’ll handle her immediately. She’ll be terminated, her certification revoked—we’ll do whatever corporate requires to rectify this failure.”
“Termination is just the baseline,” Clara replied smoothly. She walked over to the velvet tray, picked up one of the silk scarves, and handed it directly to the elderly woman, who had just stepped out of the VIP lounge escorted by the chastised security guards.
“Here you go,” Clara said softly to the woman. “This is the blue floral pattern. And please—it’s a gift from corporate. Consider it our apology for how you were treated here today.”
The elderly woman’s eyes welled with tears as she took the soft silk in her worn hands. “Oh... thank you. Thank you so much, young lady. I don't know what to say.”
May you like
“You don't have to say anything,” Clara smiled warmly. “Have a wonderful birthday with your granddaughter.”
