Chapter 4 - The Surveillance Tape

Ethan rushed to intercept Clara, gesturing frantically toward the back office. “Ms. Vance, please, let’s discuss this in my office. We can review the security footage in private. I assure you, we take customer relations—and executive oversight—with the utmost seriousness.”

“No, Ethan,” Clara said, her tone immovable. “We’ll review the footage right here on the main floor. Where everyone can see it.”

She walked purposefully toward the central service desk, where Jenna stood frozen behind the computer terminal. Clara stopped, offering the young associate a gentle, reassuring smile that stood in sharp contrast to the cold fury she directed at the management.

“Jenna, right?” Clara asked quietly.

Jenna nodded rapidly, her eyes wide with fear. “Yes, ma’am. I’m sorry, I was just working the register, I didn't want to get involved—”

“It’s okay, Jenna,” Clara said softly. “You don't need to be afraid. Can you pull up the floor camera feed from camera four covering the evening-wear display for the last fifteen minutes?”

Jenna’s fingers flew across the keyboard. Within seconds, a high-definition video window popped up on the terminal screen, showing the exact stretch of floor where Natalie had approached Clara earlier that afternoon.

Ethan, Natalie, and Clara crowded around the register counter as the video played in crisp, silent detail.

On the screen, Natalie could be seen standing near the back of the evening-wear rack. The footage clearly showed her pulling the emerald silk dress off a hanger. Before handing it to Clara, Natalie’s hands made a sharp, deliberate motion near the back seam—a quick, practiced tear of the delicate silk fabric. Then, she smoothed it down, turned around with a bright, pleasant smile, and walked directly over to Clara, thrusting the damaged garment into her hands.

The video played on, showing the exact moment Natalie stepped back and signaled security.

The silence on the sales floor was absolute.

Natalie stared at the screen, her face completely drained of color, her knees trembling so badly she had to grip the edge of the display case to keep from falling.

“Well,” Clara said, breaking the silence as she turned her head slowly to look at Natalie. “It seems your memory of events was slightly flawed, Natalie. Or perhaps you just underestimated how thorough our surveillance systems are.”

“I—I can explain,” Natalie whispered, tears of pure panic springing to her eyes. “I was stressed, my inventory numbers were short, I made a mistake—”

May you like

“You didn't make a mistake,” Clara said, her voice like shards of ice. “You committed malicious misconduct, abuse of authority, and false imprisonment against someone you believed had no recourse. And in doing so, you proved precisely why unannounced store visits are necessary.”
