Chapter 10 - The Midnight Courtroom

The grand marble lobby of the Cook County Recorder of Deeds office was silent and cavernous at 11:45 PM. The cleaning crew had left an hour ago, and the security guards at the front desk were half-asleep until Marcus Vance flashed his federal shield alongside the original DeLuca contingency trust.

We didn't need to break doors down. Armed with a valid, unassailable special master audit, the night duty supervisor practically tripped over himself unlocking the administrative terminal on the third floor.

Leo sat down at the main console, his fingers instantly locking onto the municipal transfer portal.

"She's doing it right now!" Leo gasped, his eyes darting across the screen. "Lily is executing the final asset sweep from her father's private chambers across the street. The transfer completes in ninety seconds!"

"Override it," I said, standing directly behind him with my hands resting calmly on the back of his chair.

"I need your thumbprint and the estate seal," Leo said, pointing to a biometric scanner attached to the terminal.

I pressed my thumb firmly against the glass. The scanner beeped green. Leo executed the command, and across the screen, a massive, unyielding red blockade slammed down over Lily’s corporate transfer portal.

TRANSACTION REJECTED. ASSET FREEZE ENFORCED BY SPECIAL MASTER.

Down the hall, the heavy oak double doors of the administrative office suddenly burst open.

Judge Thomas Vance strode into the room, his black robes billowing behind him, his face flushed with incandescent rage. Right behind him was Lily, her tailored suit slightly wrinkled, her eyes wide with frantic disbelief as she stared at the glowing terminal.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?!" Judge Vance roared, his voice echoing off the marble pillars. "This is an illegal seizure! I am holding a federal injunction signed—"

"Signed by a judge who is about to be disbarred and indicted for thirty years of municipal corruption," Marcus interrupted, stepping forward with his service weapon holstered, pulling a federal arrest warrant from his jacket and slamming it onto the desk.

Lily froze. She looked at Marcus, then at Adrian standing quietly in the shadows of the doorway, and finally at me, standing by the console with my Vera Wang dress stained and ruined, yet completely unshakeable.

"You can't do this," Lily whispered, her voice trembling for the first time. "We won. The system protects us."

"The system only protects you as long as everyone agrees to play by your rules, Lily," I said, walking slowly toward her until we were standing only inches apart.

I looked into her eyes—the same eyes that had feigned dizziness on my wedding morning, the same eyes that had thought they could steal my life without consequence.

"You wanted my bridal car," I whispered softly, letting the silence of the room wrap around us. "You wanted my fiancé, my home, and my world. You can keep the house, Lily. Because tomorrow morning, the federal government is seizing it as proceeds of a crime. And you're going to share a cell block with the father who taught you how to steal."

Lily opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. The pristine corporate armor had completely shattered.

Judge Vance lunged forward, his face turning purple with fury, but Marcus stepped between them, clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto the wrists of a sitting federal judge while two backup federal units swarmed into the room from the stairwells.

Adrian stood quietly by the doorway, watching the downfall of the man who had manipulated him for a decade. He didn't smile. He didn't gloat. He simply looked at me, a silent, heavy understanding passing between us—the final, irrevocable severing of our past.

I turned my back on the courtroom, walked to the tall arched window overlooking the glittering lights of Chicago, and took my first deep, unburdened breath of my new life.

Behind me, the handcuffs clicked shut. But the real story—the one I was finally writing for myself—was only just beginning.
