Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the System

I didn't let Lily see the cold jolt of realization that hit my chest. She thought she held all the cards, that her clever legal maneuver with the blind trust had checkmated the federal investigation before it could properly begin. But she didn't know what I had spent the last six months doing while Adrian was busy playing kingpin.

"You're welcome to the house, Lily," I said smoothly, stepping past her toward the open doorway. "And you're welcome to whatever paper deeds are left in the safe. But you might want to check the server room in the basement before you start celebrating."

Lily's composure faltered for a fraction of a second, the predatory smirk tightening. "What did you do?"

"Nothing illegal," I smiled, lifting my chin. "Just updating the cloud architecture."

I didn't wait for her response. I walked past her into the grand foyer of the townhouse—a place where I had spent three years playing the role of the obedient, polished mob fiancée, hosting dinners I didn't want to attend, smiling at men whose hands were stained with blood. Every piece of expensive art, every imported marble floor, was soaked in dirty money.

Marcus followed me inside, leaving two junior agents to keep Lily on the porch.

"Is she right about the trust?" I asked Marcus as we descended the wide staircase toward the basement bunker.

"Technically, yes," Marcus muttered, shining his tactical flashlight down the dim hallway. "If the deed was transferred thirty days ago in a legitimate private transaction, seizing the real estate under RICO is going to take months of federal litigation. She's effectively locked us out of the physical headquarters."

"Only if she has the encryption keys to the local server," I replied, stopping in front of the heavy steel-reinforced door of Adrian's private office.

The door was unlocked. When we pushed it open, the room was dark, illuminated only by the faint blue glow of multiple monitor screens.

Sitting in Adrian’s leather executive chair was a young man in his early twenties, furiously typing away at a mechanical keyboard. He had a messy mop of blond hair, pale skin, and a hoodie pulled over his ears. When the light hit him, he froze, his fingers hovering over the keys.

"Leo?" I said, stepping into the room.

Leo swallowed hard, slowly raising his hands. "Evelyn. Look, I can explain. Lily said—she told me the accounts were locked unless I ran the override code—"

"Leo is Adrian’s lead systems engineer," I explained calmly to Marcus, who immediately drew his weapon and pointed it toward the floor. "And he's also the person who set up my secure burner phone this morning."

Leo looked between me and the federal agent, panic written all over his face. "You set me up, Evelyn! You gave me the proxy IP address to route the ledger transfers to the DOJ!"

"I gave you an exit strategy, Leo," I corrected gently, walking over to the main terminal. I looked at the screen. A progress bar was pulsing brightly: Data Transfer: 84% Complete.

Lily hadn't just come for the house. She had sent Leo to wipe the local drives before the feds could analyze the physical servers.

"She's draining the secondary ledger right now, isn't she?" I asked Leo.

Leo nodded miserably. "She has the master password. The one Adrian gave her a year ago when he thought she was dying of a pulmonary embolism. It's an administrative override. Once it hits one hundred percent, every transaction trace on the local drive is permanently scrubbed."

Marcus stepped forward, his face dark. "Can you stop it, son?"

"No," Leo whispered, his voice shaking. "If I pull the plug now, the system triggers a dead-man's switch. It wipes not just the local drive, but the entire decentralized backup network across three different continents."

I stared at the screen as the progress bar ticked up to 91%. Lily wasn't just a business partner. She was an escape artist with an emergency parachute, ready to leave Adrian, the syndicate, and the feds holding an empty bag.

And she was about to erase the one piece of evidence that connected Judge Vance to the entire operation.
