Chapter 2 - The Phantom Deed

The black unmarked federal SUV pulled up to the wrought-iron gates of the DeLuca Gold Coast townhouse just twenty minutes later. The street, usually quiet and exclusive, was now swarming with crime scene tape, local squad cars, and curious onlookers snapping photos with their phones.
As Marcus and I stepped out of the vehicle, the heavy oak front door of the mansion swung open.
Lily Crawford stood on the threshold. Gone was the fragile, dizzy girl in the white silk dress who had stolen my bridal car. She was wearing a tailored charcoal pantsuit, her posture rigid, her expression utterly devoid of the calculated vulnerability she had weaponized against Adrian for years. In her hand, she held a thick leather-bound document folio.
Two local patrol officers tried to step forward to block her, but Lily raised a single piece of heavy parchment, her voice cutting crisply through the morning air.
"I suggest you check the timestamp on that jurisdiction order, Officer," Lily said, her tone dripping with absolute authority. "This property, along with all physical assets contained within, was transferred into a blind trust thirty days ago. I am the sole trustee. You have no legal right to search this premises without a federal warrant explicitly naming me."
I walked up the stone steps, my heels clicking sharply against the pavement. Marcus followed close behind, his hand resting casually near his service weapon.
"Lily," I said softly, stopping a few feet from her.
Lily turned her head, her eyes narrowing as she looked me up and down, taking in my wedding dress. A cold, victorious smirk touched the corners of her mouth—not the simpering smile she gave Adrian, but something much sharper. Something corporate. Something predatory.
"Evelyn," Lily purred. "I have to hand it to you. Making a scene at the hotel was theatrical. But burning down a house you never actually owned? That's just bad business."
"The house is registered in Adrian's corporate holdings," Marcus intervened, flashing his badge. "Which are currently under federal seizure pursuant to RICO indictments."
Lily didn't even flinch. She opened the folio and pulled out a single sheet of paper, handing it directly to Marcus.
"Adrian was a brilliant tactical leader, Agent Vance, but he was a terrible businessman," Lily said smoothly, her eyes never leaving mine. "Three weeks ago, facing mounting debts he hid even from Evelyn, he signed over the deed to settle a private debt. To me. The trust was filed and notarized before any federal investigation was even opened. Legally, the DeLuca empire doesn't belong to the government. It belongs to me."
Marcus scanned the document, his brow furrowing deeply. He looked up at me, silent questions flashing in his eyes.
I looked at Lily, really looked at her, stripping away the years of staged asthma attacks and manufactured frailties. I remembered the way Adrian had looked at her, the way he had rushed to her side at every minor inconvenience. I had always thought she was a mistress, a permanent parasite leeching off my fiancé's attention.
I had been entirely wrong.
"You didn't steal him from me, did you, Lily?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, the pieces suddenly snapping into a terrifying new alignment. "You didn't want Adrian's heart at all."
Lily’s smirk widened into a grin that chilled the autumn air.

"Adrian thought he was using me as a buffer against his enemies," Lily replied softly, stepping closer so only I could hear. "He never realized I was the one who set up his first offshore account. I built his empire, Evelyn. He was just the muscle dumb enough to wear the crown. And now, I'm going to take everything he thought he owned—starting with the evidence sitting on your laptop."
