Chapter 5 - The War Room

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, painting the sky in pale shades of amber and bruised violet, when the front doorbell rang.

Maya and I were sitting at her kitchen island, surrounded by scattered financial documents, bank statements, and tax returns we had pulled up via our online portals. Chloe was still fast asleep down the hall, safe and warm under her quilt.

Maya jumped up from her stool, walking quickly to the front door and pulling it open. Standing on the porch was a tall, impeccably dressed man in his late forties, wearing a tailored charcoal suit that looked like it cost more than my first car. He had sharp, hawklike features, silver-streaked hair at his temples, and a leather briefcase tucked under one arm.

Marcus Vance had arrived.

"Maya," Marcus said, his voice deep, resonant, and carrying the crisp authority of a courtroom commander. "Leo told me there was an emergency, but I didn't expect a middle-of-the-night dispatch."

"Come in, Marcus, thank you for coming so fast," Maya said, stepping aside to let him into the warm foyer. She led him straight back to the kitchen, where I stood up from my stool, my hands tightly gripping the edge of the marble counter.

Marcus walked into the kitchen, his sharp eyes instantly taking in the scattered papers, the dark circles under my eyes, and the posture of a woman who had nothing left to lose. He extended a large, warm hand toward me.

"Marcus Vance. You must be Clara. Maya’s sister."

"Clara Sterling," I said, shaking his hand firmly. "Thank you for coming on such short notice, Mr. Vance. I know this is highly irregular."

"Call me Marcus," he said, pulling out a chair and sitting down at the kitchen island without waiting for an invitation. He placed his leather briefcase on the floor, unclipped the latches, and pulled out a sleek legal pad and a gold fountain pen. "Maya gave me the Cliff Notes on the drive over. A cheating husband, a secret mistress shacking up in your house with an illegitimate child, a starving toddler shoved under a dining table, and a fraudulent second mortgage signed behind your back to fund the mistress's lifestyle." Marcus looked up at me, a dangerous, razor-sharp smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Frankly, Mrs. Sterling, it's the kind of case my junior associates fight over just for the sport of it."

I let out a breath I felt like I'd been holding since I walked through my front door yesterday evening. "Can he actually do that? Can David legally mortgage our home without my consent?"

"In this state? Absolutely not," Marcus said smoothly, clicking his pen. "Unless he forged your signature on the loan documents, which elevates this from a messy family law dispute straight into criminal fraud and forgery. Let's verify that right now."

Marcus pulled a sleek tablet out of his briefcase, connecting to the county property records database with a few quick taps. He typed in our home address, scrolled through the digitized deed history, and tapped on the document marked Second Mortgage / Deed of Trust.

Maya and I leaned in close, holding our breath as Marcus zoomed in on the signature page.

The screen displayed the scanned PDF of the loan agreement. Marcus scrolled down to the signature block where the co-borrower’s name was required.

My eyes widened in absolute shock.

The signature line didn't bear my name. In fact, it didn't even attempt to forge my signature. Instead, written in neat, deliberate cursive across the line was the name: Sarah Miller.

Marcus sat back in his chair, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face. He looked up from the screen, locking his intense gaze onto mine.

"Well, Mrs. Sterling," Marcus said softly, his voice dripping with quiet triumph. "It looks like your husband didn't just commit marital infidelity and child neglect. He committed mortgage fraud using corporate identity theft. And that means by noon today, we aren't just going to file for divorce... we're going to have the sheriff evict every single one of them out of your house before dinner."
