Chapter 9 - The Final Ultimatum

The sun was setting, casting a warm, golden glow over the living room of my house. The silence inside was no longer heavy and suffocating; it felt clean, peaceful, and entirely reclaimed. The dining room table had been cleared of the extravagant feast Eleanor had prepared, and Chloe was currently sitting on the brand-new plush living room rug, happily playing with her favorite building blocks without a single shadow hanging over her.

Maya was in the kitchen brewing a fresh pot of coffee when the heavy front doorbell rang.

I froze, looking toward the hallway. Maya stepped out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on a dish towel, her eyes narrowing. "Do you want me to get it?"

"No," I said, standing up from the sofa and smoothing down my skirt. "It’s time to finish this once and for all."

I walked down the hallway and pulled the front door open.

David stood on the porch. He looked completely shattered. His tie was loosened, his hair was disheveled, and his eyes were red-rimmed and hollow. He looked like a man who had watched his entire world implode in less than twenty-four hours.

"Clara," he whispered, his voice cracking. "Please. Can I just... can I just come inside for five minutes? Please."

I didn't step aside. I stood firmly in the doorway, blocking his entry, my arms crossed over my chest. "You have thirty seconds to say whatever pathetic excuse you came here with, David. And then you need to walk off my property before I call the sheriff back."

David swallowed hard, a tear spilling over his lower eyelid and cutting a clean path through the dust on his cheek. "I messed up, Clara. I know I messed up beyond repair. Sarah... Sarah left me an hour ago. She took Mia and went back to her family upstate once she realized the house and the corporate accounts were frozen. I have nothing left. My firm suspended me pending the fraud investigation, my mother is furious, and... and I lost my family."

"You didn't lose your family, David," I said, my voice ice-cold and steady. "You threw them away to play house with a mistress and a child you hid under a dining table while mine starved on the floor. Don't you dare stand on my porch and act like a victim."

He flinched as if I had struck him physically. He reached out a trembling hand toward the doorframe. "Is there... is there any way we can fix this? For Chloe's sake?"

"For Chloe's sake," I said, leaning forward so he could see the absolute finality in my eyes, "I am going to make sure you only see our daughter under court-supervised visitation for the rest of your natural life."

May you like

I didn't wait for him to answer. I closed the heavy oak door right in his face, sliding the deadbolt home with a satisfying, final click.
