Chapter 6 - The Lockdown of Assets

The quiet in Maya’s kitchen felt entirely different now, charged with the electric, terrifying energy of an impending counter-offensive. Marcus Vance didn't waste a single second celebrating the discovery. His fountain pen scratched furiously against his legal pad as he outlined a battle plan that made my head spin.

"Here is how this plays out," Marcus said, not looking up from his notes. "If David allowed Sarah Miller to sign a legal co-borrower document on your marital property without your explicit, notarized consent, the entire mortgage contract is legally voidable under state real estate statutes. Furthermore, because Sarah used an alias or her actual name while residing in a home where she had no legal title, we can loop her into the civil suit for conspiracy to commit financial fraud."

Maya crossed her arms, leaning against the edge of the refrigerator with a look of fierce satisfaction. "And what about the child neglect charge? Clara found her three-year-old daughter hiding under a dining table eating floor scraps while Eleanor and David fed the mistress's child a gourmet meal."

Marcus paused, clicking his pen against the table. His expression darkened, turning into something cold and professional. "That is our nuclear option. If we pull local child protective services into this alongside an emergency ex parte custody filing, David won't just lose the house—he could lose unsupervised visitation rights entirely. Judges do not look kindly on toddlers being treated like household pests to accommodate an affair."

I felt a cold shiver run down my spine, mixed with a bitter, sweet sense of vindication. "Do it," I said, my voice steady for the first time since I walked through my front door yesterday. "Do whatever it takes, Marcus. I want every single one of them out of my house by tonight."

"Consider it done," Marcus said, closing his briefcase with a sharp snap. "I'm heading straight to the courthouse to file the emergency injunctions before the morning docket fills up. Stay here, lock the doors, and don't answer calls from David or Eleanor. Let them think they still have the upper hand."

As Marcus stood up and headed for the front door, my phone buzzed violently against the kitchen counter. I looked down. The screen lit up with a flashing caller ID: David.

Maya reached over and flipped the phone face down. "Let it ring, Clara. The war has just begun."
