Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Grand Foyer

The air in the grand foyer was thick with the acrid scent of cordite and shattered glass. The large stained-glass window overlooking the front gardens had been blown outward, leaving jagged shards glittering under the amber emergency lights like broken teeth.

Ethan stepped out from the arched hallway onto the second-floor gallery, looking down into the open foyer below.

Standing near the center of the marble floor was Madison, her crimson pantsuit stained with dust and soot, holding a heavy-duty military-grade incendiary canister with a red warning label stamped across the side. Beside her stood the team leader—a massive, slab-muscled operative with a scarred cheek and cold, dead eyes, holding an assault rifle aimed directly at the staircase.

"I know you're up there, Ethan!" Madison screamed, her voice echoing shrilly off the vaulted ceilings, entirely unhinged now. "You think you can beat my family? You think a few smart software patches and a couple of local cops are going to stop a global conglomerate?! We own half the federal judiciary, you arrogant bastard!"

"Your family owns a prison cell waiting in federal custody, Madison," Ethan’s voice cut through the cavernous space like a razor.

He stepped out onto the second-floor railing, letting the tactical vest fall open so she could see the weapon in his hands.

The team leader snapped his rifle upward, tracking Ethan instantly. "There he is. Boss says bring him down—alive if possible, but the drive and the flash drive are the priority."

"Shoot him! Just shoot him and let's burn this place to the ground!" Madison shrieked, twisting the safety pin on the incendiary canister.

"Do it," Ethan murmured, his finger tightening on the trigger of his rifle.

Before the team leader could squeeze his round off, a heavy, deafening roar drowned out the shouting in the foyer.

The front gates of the estate—reinforced iron gates that had been locked tight—suddenly buckled inward with a thunderous metallic screech. Headlights swept blindingly across the shattered stained-glass windows, painting the foyer in flashing red and blue.

“FBI! Federal Law Enforcement! Drop your weapons!” a booming voice amplified through a bullhorn echoed across the grounds.

Madison’s face turned the color of ash. The incendiary canister slipped from her trembling fingers, hitting the marble floor with a dull, echoing clatter.

The team leader swore viciously, swinging his rifle toward the front entrance just as a wall of heavily armed federal tactical agents swarmed through the broken front doors like a tidal wave.

Ethan didn't hesitate. He vaulted over the second-floor gallery railing, dropping ten feet straight down onto the heavy leather sofa below, rolling smoothly over the cushions and coming up on one knee with his weapon leveled directly at the team leader’s chest.

"Drop it. Now," Ethan commanded, his voice cold enough to freeze blood.

The operative looked from the swarm of federal agents surrounding the foyer to the barrel of Ethan’s rifle inches from his face. Slowly, deliberately, he let his assault rifle drop to the marble floor with a heavy metallic clatter, raising his hands behind his head.

Federal agents descended upon him instantly, slamming him face-first into the floor and slapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

Another pair of agents grabbed Madison as she tried to scramble backward toward the service hallway, pinning her arms behind her back as she shrieked obscenities into the empty air.

"Ethan Vance! You're ruining everything!" she screamed, her voice cracking into hysterics as they dragged her toward the shattered front entrance. "My father will destroy you! You'll never see another cent!"

"Tell your father I’ll see him in court," Ethan said quietly, watching as she was shoved into the back of a waiting federal transport vehicle.

As the sirens wailed into the night, cutting through the damp Ohio air, Ethan let out a long, slow breath. The storm had finally broken.

He turned around and walked slowly toward the back service corridor, heading down to the underground bunker where Clara and Noah were waiting.
