Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Safe Room

The heavy steel door of the underground greenhouse bunker swung open with a slow, hydraulic hiss, breaking the heavy silence that had settled inside the reinforced concrete room.
Ethan stood in the doorway, his tactical vest unbuckled, dust and soot dusting his shoulders, but his eyes were clear.
For a second, Clara stood frozen by the emergency cot, holding Noah tightly against her hip. When she saw it was Ethan, the fierce, defensive tension melted out of her posture. A ragged gasp escaped her lips, and she practically flew across the small concrete floor, throwing her arms around his neck.
Ethan caught her, burying his face in her hair, pulling both her and Noah into a tight, fierce embrace.
"You're safe," Ethan murmured against her ear, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion. "It's over. The federal marshals have Madison and her team in custody."
Noah buried his face in Ethan’s jacket, his small frame trembling as the adrenaline finally wore off. "Is the bad lady gone, Daddy?"
"She's gone, buddy," Ethan said, scooping his son up into his free arm, holding both of them close. "She's never coming back."
Upstairs, the distant wail of federal transport sirens echoed through the soil, a comforting reminder that the nightmare was truly dismantled. But as Ethan led Clara and Noah back up into the main house—now crawling with federal agents, crime scene investigators, and digital forensics specialists—he knew the legal battle had only just begun.
The following morning, the sun broke through the shattered stained-glass windows of the grand foyer, casting long, fractured ribbons of light across the marble floor.
Ethan sat in his private study on the second floor, a cup of cold black coffee sitting untouched on the mahogany desk. Across from him sat Agent Miller, a senior investigator with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s white-collar and corporate corruption division, looking over the contents of the black flash drive Ethan had pulled from the east wing safe.
"We decrypted the partitions an hour ago, Mr. Vance," Agent Miller said, pushing his glasses up his nose as he tapped a finger against his tablet screen. "The data matches everything Sarah Vance compiled five years ago. It’s an open-and-shut case of corporate espionage, financial fraud, and obstruction of justice by Vance Global Technologies."
"And the charges regarding my wife's death?" Ethan asked, his voice dead flat, carrying a chilling intensity.
Agent Miller hesitated, his eyes flickering down to the case files. "The coroner’s report from five years ago officially ruled Sarah Vance’s drowning an accidental submersion during a boating trip. But with these new digital audio logs and the signed affidavit... we have enough circumstantial evidence to subpoena Madison’s father, Arthur Vance, for questioning under suspicion of conspiracy and homicide."
"Suspicion?" Ethan leaned forward, slamming his palm flat against the desk. The sharp thwack made the agent flinch. "Arthur Vance orchestrated the hostile takeover of my intellectual property, threatened my wife, and when she refused to sign over the patents, his fixers staged her murder at the family lake house! I don't want him questioned, Agent Miller. I want him in handcuffs before the sun sets today."
"Mr. Vance, I understand your anger," Agent Miller said calmly, raising a placating hand. "Arthur Vance is one of the most powerful tech magnates in the country. If we move too fast without tying up every loose digital thread, his legal team will secure a bail hearing before we can freeze his international assets. We need to strike precisely. And for that... we need a witness who was inside the inner circle."
Ethan narrowed his eyes. "You mean Madison."
"Madison is currently sitting in a holding cell at the federal courthouse," Miller nodded. "She’s panicking. Her father’s legal representatives haven't even called her back yet. They're already distancing themselves from her arrest. If you go down there and offer her a deal—cooperation in exchange for leniency on the assault and conspiracy charges—she might just give us the signature we need to take her father down."
Ethan stood up slowly, walking over to the tall arched window that overlooked the immaculate rose garden outside. Through the glass, he could see Clara sitting on a stone bench on the patio, gently brushing Noah’s hair as the boy played with a toy truck.
For five years, Ethan had lived a half-life, trapped behind the locked doors of the east wing, consumed by grief and guilt, believing there was nothing he could do to bring justice to Sarah. But looking out at Clara and Noah, he realized the past wasn't something to hide away in a vault anymore. It was something that needed to be brought into the light so they could finally move forward.

"Set up the meeting," Ethan said quietly, turning back to face the agent. "I'm going to go talk to Madison."
