Chapter 7 - The Face of Betrayal

The federal courthouse holding facility smelled of floor wax, stale coffee, and institutional despair.
Ethan walked down the narrow, cinder-block hallway flanked by two armed federal marshals. The heavy steel doors lining the corridor muffled the distant sounds of arraignments and processing. When they reached holding cell 4B, the guard slid a small metal hatch open with a sharp, echoing scrape.
Inside, sitting on a bolted-down aluminum bench under the harsh glare of a recessed fluorescent bulb, was Madison.
Gone was the polished, untouchable socialite in the crimson pantsuit. Her hair was messy, sticking to her damp forehead; her designer blouse was wrinkled and stained with coffee; and her eyes were red-rimmed, wide with a frantic, animalistic panic that completely stripped away her haughty facade.
When she heard the heavy door unlock and creak open, she snapped her head up. For a split second, a flash of desperate hope crossed her face—hoping it was her father’s high-priced legal team stepping through the threshold.
When she saw Ethan standing in the doorway, framed by two federal guards, her face crumpled into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom.
"You," she spat, scrambling to her feet and lunging toward the chain-link partition before the guards stepped forward, blocking her path with heavy batons. "You did this! You set me up!"
"I didn't set you up, Madison," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stepped into the small holding cell, leaving the door cracked behind him. He didn't raise his voice; he didn't need to. "You walked into my house, you tried to steal my life, and you pushed an innocent woman down my stairs. The only person who set you up is the father who is currently burning every document with your name on it to save his own empire."
Madison flinched as if she had been physically struck. Her breath hitched, and for a second, the tough exterior cracked completely.
"He... he wouldn't," she stammered, shaking her head frantically. "I did everything he asked! I got close to you, I searched that damn east wing for months, I helped manage the merger..."
"And you failed," Ethan interrupted coldly. "Your father doesn't care about your loyalty, Madison. He cares about his stock price. And right now, the federal government is seizing every asset Vance Global owns."
Madison dropped her gaze to the floor, her hands trembling violently. She slumped back down onto the aluminum bench, burying her face in her palms. The silence in the cell was heavy, suffocating.
"What do you want, Ethan?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "You already won. Why are you here?"
"Your father murdered my first wife five years ago to steal her encryption patents," Ethan said, leaning forward slightly, resting his hands on the metal table between them. "And you helped him cover it up by planting false audit trails on her computer."
Madison’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with terror and denial. "I didn't know about... I didn't know he was going to kill her! He told me it was just a corporate buyout! He said Sarah was threatening to ruin the family!"
"Ignorance isn't a legal defense when you're an active participant in a criminal conspiracy," Ethan replied flatly. "Agent Miller is drafting your indictment right now. You're looking at twenty years in a federal penitentiary for corporate fraud, assault, and obstruction."
Madison let out a choked, hysterical sob, grabbing the edges of the metal table. "Please, Ethan... we were engaged! We had a life together! You can't let them put me away for twenty years!"
"I can," Ethan said smoothly. "Or... you can sign a formal confession detailing Arthur Vance’s direct orders regarding the acquisition of Sarah’s software and the cover-up of her death. You cooperate fully with the DOJ, wear a wire if necessary, and I'll personally recommend a reduced sentence of corporate probation and minimal lockup."
Madison stared at him, the gears turning in her desperate, cornered mind. She realized with chilling clarity that her father had already abandoned her, and Ethan was her only lifeline left.
Slowly, with shaking fingers, she reached out across the table toward the pen and the federal cooperation agreement Ethan had laid out before her.
"If I sign this..." she whispered, a tear spilling over her lashes, "will my father burn with me?"
"Down to the ground," Ethan replied without blinking.

Madison picked up the pen.
