Chapter 10 - Dawn Over the Ashes

Inside the bunker, the gunfire sounded muffled and distant, like heavy thunder rolling across the hills.

Hunter sat on a narrow cot in the center of the concrete room, holding Leo against her chest, her eyes locked on the digital security monitor built into the bunker's control panel. The screen split into twelve different camera feeds covering the entire estate.

She watched in frozen horror as the battle unfolded across the mansion. Down in the grand foyer, Captain Vance and two remaining guards were locked in a fierce firefight with heavily armed intruders wearing tactical black gear. Glass shattered, antique furniture splintered into toothpicks, and smoke billowed from the hallway sensors.

On the third-floor camera feed, Lorenzo moved like a shadow through the corridors, his tactical pistol flashing in the dim emergency light as he systematically flanked and neutralized the intruders attempting to breach the upper landing. He was outnumbered, outgunned, and fighting for his entire world.

For two agonizing hours, time stretched into infinity.

Then, slowly, the gunfire began to taper off.

The screen in the bunker showed the final intruder being disarmed and zip-tied by Captain Vance near the front entrance. Smoke hung thick in the air, mixing with the smell of cordite and rain, but the mansion was quiet once more.

A heavy knock echoed against the steel door of the panic room—three slow beats, followed by two fast ones.

“Hunter,” Lorenzo’s voice came through the intercom speaker, raspy, exhausted, and bleeding around the edges. “It’s over. The house is secure.”

With trembling fingers, Hunter punched the override code into the keypad.

The hydraulic seal hissed, and the heavy steel door swung slowly open.

Standing in the doorway was Lorenzo. His tactical vest was scorched and splattered with soot, a jagged graze cut across his cheek, and his breathing was heavy. But he was standing. He was alive.

When he saw Hunter standing there holding his son—both of them safe, unharmed, and breathing—the last remnants of his iron composure gave way. He stepped into the bunker, dropped his weapon onto the floor with a heavy clatter, and pulled both of them into his arms, burying his face against Hunter’s shoulder.

“They’re gone,” Lorenzo whispered, his voice trembling as he held them tighter than life itself. “It’s over.”

The sun began to bleed over the horizon through the high bullet-riddled windows of the estate, casting a warm, golden light across the charred floors and shattered glass. The war for Rossi Harbor and Freight was won, but the empire had a new foundation now—one built not on fear, blood, and iron rules, but on a grieving maid who broke every law in the house just to keep a starving baby alive.

Lorenzo pulled back slightly, looking down at Hunter with an expression of profound, unbreakable devotion. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing her cheek.

“You said you weren't leaving,” Lorenzo whispered softly, a genuine, radiant smile finally breaking through the shadows of his face. “Good. Because I’m never letting you go.”
