Chapter 8 - The Trust of a Kingpin

When the heavy oak doors of the study closed behind the guards, the room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. Lorenzo stood by the window, staring out into the dark expanse of the North Shore courtyard, his broad shoulders tense beneath his white dress shirt.
Hunter stepped quietly into the room, adjusting Leo, who was sleeping deeply once again, completely unaware of the deadly game being played around him.
“You showed mercy,” Hunter said softly, breaking the silence.
Lorenzo turned his head slowly, looking at her over his shoulder. “Mercy is a rare commodity in my line of work, Hunter. But executing a terrified teenager who was blackmailed by professionals doesn't solve my problem. It just makes me a tyrant.”
“She almost killed your son,” Hunter reminded him gently.
“Yes, she did,” Lorenzo agreed, walking slowly back toward the center of the room. He stopped a few feet away from her, his dark eyes softening just a fraction as he looked down at the infant. “And for the second time in two weeks, you were the only person in this fortress who noticed in time to save his life.”
Hunter felt a strange warmth bloom in her chest, quickly chased by a prickle of defensive caution. “I’m just doing my job, Mr. Rossi.”
“It stopped being a job the moment you walked out of this nursery tonight and put yourself between a loaded gun and a madman,” Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a low, intense register. He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing against her arm. “You didn't have to follow me into the study. You could have locked the door and stayed safe with Leo.”
“I couldn't,” Hunter murmured, looking up to meet his intense gaze. “I know what it feels like to have everything taken away by someone who thinks they own the world. I couldn't stand by and let that bastard finish what he started.”
Lorenzo held her gaze for a long, uninterrupted moment. The barrier of cold, impenetrable armor he wore to rule his criminal empire seemed to dissolve entirely, leaving behind a man stripped bare by grief, resilience, and an unexpected, overwhelming gratitude.
“My security team traced the burner phone number Chloe’s contact used,” Lorenzo said quietly, stepping even closer. “It routes back to a syndicate operating out of Atlantic City—a rival faction led by a man named Salvatore Moretti. They aren't just trying to buy my shipping routes anymore. They want my bloodline wiped out completely so they can carve up Rossi Harbor and Freight while the board is in disarray.”
“Then you’re going to war,” Hunter stated, not as a question, but as a chilling reality.
“I am,” Lorenzo confirmed, his jaw tightening into a hard line. “Which is why I need to ask you something—something I have no right to ask.”
Hunter’s breath caught. “What is it?”
“Tomorrow morning, my private jet is flying out of a secure airstrip in Westchester,” Lorenzo said, his voice urgent and absolute. “I’m sending you and Leo to a safe house in the Swiss Alps—a heavily fortified chalet under the protection of my most trusted loyalists. You will be completely out of reach of the Moretti family, Vinnie Gallo, and anyone else trying to tear this world apart.”
Hunter stepped back, shaking her head instantly. “No. Absolutely not.”
“Hunter, listen to me—”
“No, you listen to me, Lorenzo!” Hunter interrupted, her voice rising with sudden, fierce defiance. She didn't even register that she had used his first name instead of his title. “I ran from Travis. I hid in a cheap motel. I let myself become invisible because I was terrified of everyone and everything! And look where it got me? I ended up trapped in a nightmare where my baby was stolen and my life was destroyed. I am done running.”

Lorenzo stared at her, stunned by the sudden flash of steel in her demeanor.
“If I go to Switzerland, I’m just a prisoner in a prettier cage,” Hunter continued, her eyes blazing. “I’m staying right here. I’m nursing your son, I’m keeping him safe, and if your enemies want to get to him, they’ll have to go through me first.”
