Chapter 9 - The Siege of North Shore

The storm broke just before midnight.

Heavy, torrential rain lashed against the massive glass windows of the Rossi estate, turning the manicured lawns into a sea of mud and driving sheets of gray water across the dark waters of the Sound. Inside the third-floor nursery, the lights flickered once, twice, and then stayed on, humming quietly as the estate’s secondary diesel generators kicked in.

Hunter sat in the velvet armchair by the window, rocking Leo gently in her arms. The baby was sleeping peacefully, his breathing deep and steady.

Downstairs, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion suddenly exploded inward with a deafening crash.

The low, staccato pop of suppressed gunfire echoed up through the heating vents, followed immediately by the blaring, high-pitched screech of the estate’s perimeter security alarm.

Hunter froze. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Before she could even stand up, the nursery door swung open, and Lorenzo rushed inside. He was dressed entirely in black tactical gear, a heavy Kevlar vest strapped across his chest, a submachine gun slung over his shoulder, and a combat knife tucked into his belt. He looked every bit the ruthless mafia commander leading a desperate defense.

“They breached the front gates,” Lorenzo said rapidly, his voice hard as iron as he crossed the room and slammed the heavy deadbolt on the nursery door. “Moretti’s hit squad. They bypassed the outer cameras using an EMP relay.”

“How many?” Hunter asked, keeping her voice remarkably steady as she clutched Leo tightly to her chest.

“At least a dozen professionals,” Lorenzo replied, pulling a heavy tactical pistol from his hip holster and checking the magazine. He walked over to the reinforced steel panic room hidden behind the bookshelf in the corner of the suite. He punched a complex numerical code into the biometric keypad, and the heavy steel door hissed open, revealing a well-lit, fortified bunker stocked with communication arrays, medical supplies, and emergency rations.

“Get inside, Hunter. Now,” Lorenzo commanded, holding the door open for her.

“What about you?” Hunter demanded, planting her feet firmly on the Persian rug. “You can’t hold off a dozen professional killers by yourself!”

“My security captain and the remaining loyal guards are holding the ground floor, but the stairwell is compromised!” Lorenzo barked, his dark eyes flashing with desperate urgency. “I need to secure the perimeter and draw them away from this suite. Get inside the panic room, lock the secondary hatch, and do not open it for anyone—do you hear me? Not for anyone unless you hear my voice giving the security passphrase.”

Before Hunter could argue, Lorenzo reached out, his hand cupping the back of her head, pulling her forward in a sudden, fierce embrace. His lips brushed against her forehead, warm and desperate, before he gently shoved her inside the fortified bunker.

“Keep my son safe,” Lorenzo whispered hoarsely.

The heavy steel door slid shut with a crushing, hydraulic hiss, locking automatically into place and plunging Hunter into a world of concrete walls, emergency lights, and deafening silence.
