Chapter 2 - The 8:00 AM Trap

The morning sun cast a sharp, golden light across the hotel room, but I had been awake for hours. I stood by the window, fully dressed in a sharp charcoal-gray pantsuit, a crisp white silk blouse, and my favorite pair of black leather heels. Every detail of my appearance was immaculate, projecting an aura of cold, unyielding authority.
Skylar was still sleeping peacefully, curled up under the heavy duvet. I had already arranged for a trusted childhood friend of mine, a reliable woman named Sarah who lived across town, to come pick Skylar up at 7:30 AM and take her out for a fun morning of shopping and pancakes so she wouldn't have to witness the impending wreckage.
Right on schedule, a soft knock sounded at the hotel room door. I opened it to find Sarah standing there with a warm, sympathetic smile.
"Is she ready?" Sarah asked softly, stepping inside.
"She's still sleeping, but you can wake her gently," I replied, handing Sarah a hotel key card and a credit card for expenses. "Thank you so much for doing this, Sarah. I need to handle some business at the house, and I can't have Skylar anywhere near it when things blow up."
"Say no more, Char. You go take care of your life. I've got my girl right here," Sarah said, squeezing my arm reassuringly before heading toward the bedroom.
I took a deep breath, grabbed my leather briefcase, and walked out into the cool morning air.
By 7:45 AM, my car was parked two houses down from my own property on a quiet, tree-lined street in San Bernardino. I didn't have to wait long. Just as Marcus had promised, an unmarked dark sedan pulled up near the curb a few yards away, and two uniformed San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies stepped out, joined a moment later by Marcus Vance himself, looking impeccably sharp in a navy three-piece suit.
Marcus walked over to my driver’s side window and tapped lightly on the glass. I rolled it down.
"Morning, Charlotte," Marcus said, his voice calm and professional. "You're looking sharp. Are you ready for this?"
"I was born ready, Marcus," I replied, unlocking my car door and stepping out onto the pavement. "What's the play?"
"We wait for the contractor and the notary to arrive. Once they enter the house and initiate the signing process for the fraudulent deposit and loan documents, Brandon and Gertrude will officially commit wire fraud and attempted grand theft by deception. That’s our cue to walk right through the front door," Marcus explained, pulling a thick manila folder from under his arm. "I've already spoken to the lead detective in the financial crimes division. The arrest warrants for Brandon and Gertrude are pre-drafted and ready to be signed the second the deputies witness the active crime in progress."
"And Hailey?" I asked.
Marcus offered a thin, humorless smile. "Oh, she’s an accomplice on multiple counts of conspiracy and digital trespass. We’ll make sure she has a front-row seat to the proceedings."
At precisely 8:00 AM, a sleek black pickup truck bearing the logo of a high-end regional contracting firm pulled smoothly into our driveway. A middle-aged man in a crisp polo shirt stepped out, carrying a heavy leather briefcase and a portable document scanner. A moment later, a second car pulled in behind him—a mobile notary public service vehicle.
I watched as the front door of my house swung open. Brandon stepped out onto the porch, wearing a designer golf shirt and a beaming, self-satisfied grin, shaking hands with the contractor as if he were the lord of the manor welcoming peasants to his estate. Gertrude stood just behind him in a silk robe, holding a porcelain teacup and laughing loudly at something the contractor said.
"Showtime," Marcus murmured, adjusting his tie.
With measured, deliberate steps, the two sheriff deputies leading the way, Marcus and I walked up the driveway, our heels clicking sharply against the concrete.
Brandon didn't notice us at first. He was too busy gesturing grandly toward the front entryway, ushering the contractor and the notary inside. "Right this way, gentlemen. We're ready to get these final papers signed and fund this project immediately. My wife’s accounts are fully loaded, so there won't be any delays."
"Actually, Brandon," I said, my voice cutting through the crisp morning air like a razor blade. "There are going to be some massive delays."
Brandon froze mid-gesture. The warm, triumphant smile instantly vanished from his face, replaced by a mask of sheer, unadulterated shock as he turned and saw me standing at the foot of the porch steps, flanked by two armed sheriff deputies and a high-priced attorney.
"Char?" Brandon stammered, his face turning a sickly shade of pale gray. "What... what is the meaning of this? What are the cops doing here?"
Gertrude dropped her teacup. It shattered against the concrete porch floor, sending porcelain shards and hot brown liquid splashing everywhere. "Charlotte! Have you lost your mind? Calling the police on your own husband while we're trying to do business?"
Hailey poked her head out from the doorway, her phone already raised in her hand, frantically trying to hit record. "Oh my god, are you seriously making a scene right now? Put that phone away, Char—wait, why are you recording us?" she shrieked, suddenly realizing one of the deputies was holding a body camera pointed directly at her face.
"Good morning, Brandon. Good morning, Gertrude," I said, ascending the porch steps with the slow, terrifying grace of a predator closing in on its prey. I stopped right in front of my husband, looking him dead in the eye. "You wanted a signature for the house renovation? Well, I’m right here. Let’s talk about signatures."
Brandon’s knees visibly buckled. He opened and closed his mouth like a fish out of water, desperately searching for words that refused to come.

"Officers," I said calmly, turning slightly toward the two deputies. "That man right there, and the woman behind him, have spent the last six months systematically forging my signature, stealing my identity, and attempting to fraudulently seize ownership of my property. I want them arrested right now."
