Chapter 3 - The House of Cards Collapses

"You can't arrest us! This is a domestic dispute!" Gertrude shrieked, stepping forward with her finger pointed aggressively at my face, her face twisted into an ugly snarl of pure panic. "She's lying! She’s mentally unstable, the poor thing has been working herself to the bone and losing her mind! Brandon, tell them your wife is crazy!"

Brandon swallowed hard, his throat bobbing up and down as he tried to regain some shred of composure. He forced a pathetic, trembling smile toward the two towering sheriff deputies. "Officers, there’s been a terrible misunderstanding here. This is just a marital disagreement. My wife is stressed out, she’s overworked, she doesn't know what she's saying—"

"Quiet, Mr. Miller," the lead deputy interrupted, his voice deep, authoritative, and entirely devoid of patience. He stepped onto the porch, his hand resting casually near his handcuffs. "We received a verified report from county financial crimes investigators detailing active felony identity theft, bank fraud, and document forgery linked directly to this address and these specific names."

The contractor and the notary stood frozen in the doorway, staring back and forth between us in stunned disbelief. The notary slowly backed away, clutching his leather briefcase to his chest like a shield. "I... I think I'm going to wait in my car," he muttered, turning on his heel and hurrying down the steps.

"Wait! Don't leave, we need you to sign those papers!" Hailey yelled, thrusting her phone forward as she tried to shove past the deputies to film the contractor's face. "This is harassment! I'm live-streaming this right now, thousands of people are going to see you corrupt cops abuse your power!"

Deputy Miller didn't even blink. He shot a sharp glance at his partner. "Officer, secure that phone and detain that civilian for interfering with an active criminal investigation."

Before Hailey could let out another screech, the second deputy stepped forward, gently but firmly pinned Hailey’s arm behind her back, and relieved her of her smartphone, turning off the recording instantly. Hailey let out a theatrical, ear-piercing wail that sounded like a cat caught in a lawnmower.

"Mom! Help me! They're assaulting me!" Hailey cried out, thrashing uselessly against the deputy's grip.

"Get your hands off my daughter, you fascist pigs!" Gertrude lunged forward, clawing wildly at the air like a rabid animal, aiming her long, acrylic fingernails directly at my face.

I didn't flinch. I didn't even blink. I simply took one calm step back.

Marcus Vance stepped smoothly into the gap, raising his briefcase as a barrier while the first deputy grabbed Gertrude by both shoulders, spinning her around with practiced efficiency and slapping cold steel cuffs around her wrists with a crisp click.

"Gertrude Miller, you have the right to remain silent..." the deputy began reading her rights in a monotone, bored cadence that contrasted hilariously with Gertrude's hysterical shrieking.

Brandon stood paralyzed, watching his mother and sister get detained within thirty seconds of the police arriving. He looked over at me, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and filled with a desperate, pleading terror.

"Char... please," Brandon whispered, his voice cracking horribly. "Please, don't do this. We're a family. Think of Skylar! How is Skylar going to feel when she finds out her mother put her father in handcuffs? We can talk about this inside. Drop the charges, Char. Please."

I looked at him—really looked at him. For five years, I had excused his laziness, ignored his disrespect, and worked myself into exhaustion to provide for a man who viewed me not as a partner, but as an endless, bottomless ATM machine. The man standing before me wasn't a husband. He was a parasite begging the host not to shake him off.

"You didn't think about Skylar when you and your mother forced her to sit in a dark kitchen eating instant soup while you stuffed your faces with king crab," I said, my voice cold, quiet, and dead steady. "You didn't think about Skylar when you forged my signature to steal the roof over her head. You made your bed, Brandon. Now lie in it."

Deputy Miller stepped up to Brandon, grabbing his arm firmly. "Brandon Miller, you're under arrest for felony grand theft by deception, identity theft, and forgery. Turn around and put your hands behind your back."

Brandon didn't even fight. His legs seemed to turn to jelly, and the deputies had to support his dead weight as they slapped the handcuffs on his wrists and marched him down the steps toward the waiting patrol car.

Hailey was sobbing hysterically now, handcuffed and being led toward the second cruiser. Gertrude was screaming obscenities at the top of her lungs, shouting that she would sue the county, sue Marcus, and strip every cent from my bank accounts before the day was through.

Marcus Vance adjusted his jacket cuffs, watching the patrol cars light up their red and blue overhead flashers as they prepared to pull away from the curb.

"Well," Marcus said dryly, turning to look at me with a faint smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "That went remarkably smoothly. Outstanding prep work on the financial documents, Charlotte. You basically handed the prosecution an open-and-shut case on a silver platter."

"Thank you, Marcus," I replied, watching the taillights of the police cruisers disappear down the quiet suburban street. "How fast can we file for an emergency protective order and expedited divorce proceedings?"

"By noon today," Marcus answered smoothly. "And by tomorrow morning, we'll have a judge sign an emergency eviction order forcing Gertrude and Hailey off the property permanently, while Brandon rots in a holding cell waiting for his arraignment."

May you like

I took a deep, shuddering breath of the cool morning air. For the first time in six long years, the heavy, suffocating weight pressing down on my chest was entirely gone.
