Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The heavy scent of metallic blood and shattered glass hung thick in the grand foyer, mixing with the crisp, chilling night air pouring through the splintered front doors. Christian Vance stood amidst the wreckage like a dark monolith, his ice-lean gaze locked entirely on Michael, who was now cornered against the marble hearth like a trapped animal.

"Christian, please," Michael stammered, his polished corporate facade completely stripped away, revealing the cowardly, pathetic man hiding underneath. He slid his hand subtly along the wooden mantelpiece, his fingers inching closer to a heavy brass candlestick sitting near the edge. "We can settle this. You and I, we've made billions together. Whatever Victoria meant to you—"

"Don't you dare say her name," Christian cut him off, his voice flat, emotionless, and infinitely dangerous.

The casual cruelty in Christian's tone made my blood run cold. I had worked in this estate for over three years, serving as a quiet, invisible shadow who managed the household staff, organized the social events, and kept my head down to protect my paycheck. I knew Michael was a monster behind closed doors—a tyrant who ruled his family with psychological terror and physical abuse. But Christian Vance? Christian was a ghost story whispered among the ultra-wealthy elite. He was a ruthless venture capitalist and private equity titan who bought corporations just to gut them, a man whose enemies routinely vanished or went bankrupt overnight.

And tonight, I was learning firsthand that Victoria—the glamorous, seemingly untouchable socialite wife of my employer—had a history with this terrifying predator that went far deeper than high-society pleasantries.

Michael saw the movement in Christian's eyes and panicked. In a desperate, split-second burst of adrenaline, his hand shot out, grabbing the heavy brass candlestick off the mantel. With a savage snarl, he whipped it around, lunging straight at Christian's head with murderous intent.

It was a suicidal move.

Christian didn't even flinch. He didn't blink. As Michael brought the heavy brass weapon down in a vicious arc, Christian simply sidestepped with terrifying, fluid grace. With blinding speed, his left hand shot out like a striking viper, wrapping around Michael's wrist with an iron grip that produced a sickening crunch of fracturing bone.

"Aghhh!" Michael shrieked, dropping the candlestick as his knees buckled instantly under the agonizing pressure.

Before Michael could even hit the floor, Christian’s right hand lashed out, grabbing him by the expensive lapels of his black tuxedo. With one effortless heave, Christian hoisted the grown man into the air as if he weighed nothing more than a sack of laundry, slamming him hard against the oak-paneled wall beside the fireplace.

The impact knocked the wind completely out of Michael’s lungs. A wet, ragged gasp tore from his throat, and his eyes bulged in absolute terror as Christian held him suspended inches off the floor by his collar alone.

"Did you really think," Christian whispered, leaning in close so his lips were mere centimeters from Michael's pale, sweating face, "that because you married her, you owned her? Did you think that locking her away in this mausoleum would keep her safe from me?"

"I... I didn't know..." Michael choked out, his hands clawing desperately at Christian's wrists, trying in vain to pry the iron fingers loose. "She... she was my wife..."

"She was mine long before she ever looked at your pathetic bank account," Christian hissed, his voice laced with a dark, suffocating venom that made my stomach churn. "And you slaughtered her because she finally found the courage to pack her bags and leave your miserable estate."

From my hiding spot behind the curved staircase, I felt Mia tremble violently in my arms. I pulled her closer, burying her face deeper against my shoulder so she couldn't see her father dangling helplessly from the wall like a broken doll. My mind was racing a million miles an hour. Victoria had been planning to leave? She had endured years of bruises hidden beneath heavy makeup, years of psychological torture, all while trying to shield her daughter. And tonight, when she finally made her move, Michael had snapped and thrown her into the glass display cabinet.

And Christian Vance had been watching all along.

How had Christian known? How had he bypassed the jammers? The terrifying realization hit me like a physical blow: Christian hadn't just happened to show up. He had been monitoring this house. He had eyes and ears everywhere.

"Please, Christian," Michael wept openly now, snot and tears streaming down his contorted face as the lack of oxygen turned his lips a dangerous shade of blue. "Take everything. Take the estate, take my company, take my accounts... just don't kill me."

Christian slowly turned his head, his ice-blue eyes sweeping across the foyer until they locked directly onto the shadows of the staircase. Straight onto me.

My heart stopped. Every muscle in my body turned to ice. I was exposed.

Christian’s gaze pierced right through the dim light, holding me in a paralyzing stare before he shifted his attention back to the gasping man in his grip.

"Your money, Michael?" Christian let out a cold, humorless chuckle that sounded like grinding stones. "I’m already taking your company. By tomorrow morning, your entire empire will belong to me, and you'll be rotting in a black-site prison where no one will ever find you."

Christian loosened his grip just enough for Michael to drop heavily onto the floor, where he collapsed into a pathetic, wheezing heap, coughing violently and clutching his broken wrist.

May you like

"But before we talk about prisons, Michael," Christian continued smoothly, turning away from him and taking a slow step toward the staircase where I cowered with Mia, "we have a loyal employee to thank for staying alive long enough to bear witness to your execution."
