Chapter 3 - The Price of Loyalty

The heavy silence that followed Christian’s words felt heavier than the marble pillars supporting the mansion's high ceiling. My heart slammed against my ribs with such velocity that I was certain everyone in the room could hear it. I tightened my grip around little Mia, my mind frantically calculating our survival odds against a man who possessed the wealth of a small nation and the cold, unyielding demeanor of an assassin.

Christian took another slow, deliberate step toward the curved staircase, his leather shoes crunching over the debris. Every movement he made was calculated, predatory, and completely unhurried. He knew he held absolute dominion over this space.

"Come out," Christian said, his deep, resonant voice echoing softly off the marble walls. It wasn't a question or a request; it was an absolute command. "I know you're there, and I know you've been holding that little girl safe through this entire nightmare."

Slowly, painfully aware of every breath I took, I eased myself out from the deep shadows beneath the staircase. I kept my movements slow, deliberate, and entirely non-threatening, lifting my empty hands into the air to show him I carried no weapons. I kept Mia tucked tightly behind my skirt, shielding her small frame from the horrific sight of her mother’s body just a few feet away.

When I stepped fully into the dim light of the foyer, Christian stopped. His piercing ice-blue eyes swept over my dust-stained clothes, the trembling of my hands, and the defensive posture I had instinctively assumed. For a fleeting second, a strange, unreadable flicker crossed his harsh features—something resembling a grim, dark approval.

"You're the estate manager," Christian stated, his tone leveling out into something professional yet intensely probing. "Elena, right?"

"Yes," I managed to whisper, my throat dry as sandpaper. I swallowed hard, forcing my voice to steady itself. "Yes, Mr. Vance. It's Elena."

"You stayed," Christian observed, tilting his head slightly as he looked down at little Mia, who was peeking out cautiously from behind my leg. "When Michael locked the doors, jammed the communications, and turned this house into a slaughterhouse, you didn't run out the servants' exit. You stayed to protect her."

"I couldn't leave her here with him," I replied, my voice growing stronger, fueled by a sudden surge of protective fury that overrode my terror. I pointed a trembling finger down at Michael, who was still wheezing and clutching his broken wrist on the floor. "He was going to kill her, too. Just like he killed Victoria."

Hearing her mother's fate spoken out loud caused Mia to let out a muffled, heartbreaking sob, burying her face back into my fabric. I stroked her hair gently, never breaking eye contact with Christian Vance. I knew I was playing a dangerous game. I was standing before a billionaire predator who operated outside the law, yet strangely, in this shattered house of horrors, Christian felt like the only anchor of stability left in the world.

Christian let out a low breath, looking away from me for a moment to gaze down at Victoria's motionless body lying in the shimmering silver dress amidst the blood-stained glass. A muscle twitched tightly along his jawline, the only outward sign of the deep, volatile grief he was fighting to keep locked beneath the surface.

"She didn't deserve this," Christian murmured, more to himself than to me. He crouched down beside Victoria, his large, powerful hands gently reaching out to adjust the folds of her ruined sequin dress, covering a jagged piece of glass that had pierced her shoulder. The tenderness in his movement stood in violent contrast to the merciless brutality he had just inflicted upon Michael. It was a raw, human gesture that proved the ice-cold titan standing before me possessed a bleeding, burning heart.

Behind him, Michael began to stir. Spitting a mix of blood and saliva onto the pristine white marble, Michael pushed himself up onto his good elbow, his eyes wide with desperate fury as he watched Christian touch the woman he had murdered.

"You... you bastard," Michael choked out, his voice a hoarse, ragged screech. "She was my wife! She signed the papers! She belonged to me!"

Christian didn't even look back. Without turning his head, he rose smoothly to his full height, his dark overcoat sweeping the floor as he pivoted to face Michael.

"She never belonged to you, Michael," Christian said coldly, taking a slow step toward him. "She was trapped in a gilded cage built by a insecure coward with a god complex. You bought her family's debts, you manipulated her into marriage, and you spent seven years trying to break her spirit. But you failed. Because right up until the moment you murdered her, she was making plans to walk out those front doors with her daughter."

Michael laughed hysterically, a high-pitched, manic sound that echoed uncomfortably off the high ceilings. "And where was she going? To you? You think she wanted you? You're just a monster in a different suit, Christian! We're the same—"

Crack.

Before Michael could finish his sentence, Christian closed the distance between them in a blur of motion. He delivered a brutal, lightning-fast boot kick straight into Michael's ribs, sending the grown man flying sideways across the polished marble floor. Michael slammed hard into the base of a massive marble pillar, gasping for air as he curled into a tight, pathetic ball of agony.

"Do not ever compare me to a piece of garbage like you," Christian said, his voice dangerously quiet.

He turned his glacial gaze back toward me and little Mia. The terrifying aura of violence shifted instantly into something chillingly calm. He reached into the inner pocket of his dark overcoat, withdrew a sleek black satellite phone that completely bypassed the signal jammers Michael had installed, and tapped a single button.

"Vance," he spoke crisps into the device. "Bring the transport around to the front entrance. And notify the clean-up crew and my legal team. We have a full estate acquisition to process tonight."
