Chapter 9 - The Golden Cage

The residential wing of Christian Vance’s coastal fortress was a stunning departure from the stark, industrial bunker below. Stepping out of the private elevator, we entered a sprawling, sun-drenched suite of rooms designed with understated elegance—warm oak accents, plush cream-colored carpeting, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the vast, churning expanse of the Pacific Ocean, and minimalist art pieces that whispered wealth without shouting it.
Marcus led us down a softly lit hallway, stopping in front of a pair of heavy, double walnut doors.
"This will be your quarters, Miss Elena," Marcus said, turning the brass handle and pushing the doors open to reveal a magnificent master suite complete with a sprawling king-sized bed, a connected child's bedroom already outfitted with soft lighting and plush toys, and a luxurious marble bathroom. "The chef has prepared a light meal, which will be brought up shortly. If you or the young miss require anything at all—clothing, toiletries, medical attention—simply press the intercom pad by the bedside, and my team will attend to it immediately."
"Thank you, Marcus," I said, stepping inside and gently setting Mia down on the edge of the plush bed. The little girl looked around the luxurious room with wide, uncomprehending eyes, exhaustion finally winning out over her adrenaline.
"Of course," Marcus replied with a polite nod before quietly pulling the double doors closed, leaving us in the peaceful, insulating silence of the suite.
I turned my attention to Mia. Gently stripping off her dust-and-tear-stained clothes, I coaxed her into a warm, soothing bath in the oversized marble tub, washing away the horrors of the estate. Afterward, I dressed her in a soft, oversized cotton shirt provided by the automated wardrobe service, and tucked her into the cozy bed in the adjacent room. Within minutes, exhausted by trauma and grief, her breathing deepened, and she drifted off into a heavy, dreamless sleep.
I sat in a velvet armchair beside her bed, staring out the massive glass windows at the distant line where the dark ocean met the starless night sky. My mind raced in a frantic blur. I was safe. Mia was safe. Michael was locked away in a black-site cage, his empire dismantled piece by piece by a man who moved like a shadow and possessed the wrath of a god.
Yet, as I looked at the sleek, high-tech security pad blinking on the wall, a chilling realization settled over me: I had merely traded one master for another.
Christian Vance was not a savior out of a fairy tale. He was a predator who had used this tragedy to claim total dominance over his greatest corporate rival while settling a deep, personal vendetta for a woman he had once loved. What would happen to us when the dust settled? Would we become permanent prisoners in this golden cliffside cage, bound to his service forever by gratitude and fear?
A soft, electronic chime chimed near the suite entrance, breaking my spiraling thoughts.
Curious and cautious, I stood up quietly from the armchair, tiptoed out of Mia's room, and walked softly across the suite to the heavy walnut doors. I cracked them open a few inches.
Standing in the hallway was a young female aide holding a silver tray laden with a steaming cup of tea and a sealed manila folder stamped with a bold red CONFIDENTIAL.
"For Miss Elena," the aide whispered politely, offering the tray. "Compliments of Mr. Vance."
I hesitated for a second before reaching out and taking the tray and the folder. "Thank you," I murmured, and the aide gave a brisk nod before turning and walking down the hallway.
I closed the doors, locking the deadbolt with a heavy, satisfying click. Carrying the tray over to the coffee table, I placed the steaming tea down and picked up the manila folder. My fingers trembled slightly as I broke the red seal, pulled out the crisp documents inside, and began to read.
The first page wasn't a standard corporate document or a legal contract. It was a certified property deed transfer, completely executed and notarized less than an hour ago.
It legally transferred full ownership of the multi-million dollar estate where Victoria had been murdered—along with all its surrounding land, assets, and operational rights—directly into my name.
Attached to the bottom of the page was a handwritten note scrawled in Christian's sharp, aggressive handwriting:
