Chapter 10 - The Obsidian Crown

The silence in the sub-basement loading bay was absolute, broken only by the distant, rhythmic drip of water from an overhead pipe. Celeste Vane stood frozen beside her black Audi, her chest heaving as she stared at the man she had tried to execute less than forty-eight hours ago. The honey-blonde hair was slightly disheveled, the emerald silk gown stained with a splash of spilled champagne near the hem. Every vestige of her untouchable Chicago royalty facade had been stripped away, leaving only raw, exposed terror.

"Lorenzo," she breathed, her voice cracking as she took an instinctive step backward against the metal door of her car. "You—you were supposed to be dead. The north exit..."

"The north exit was a very neat trap, Celeste," Lorenzo said, his voice low, measured, and terrifyingly calm as he closed the distance between them step by steady step. "Unfortunately for you, I have staff members who pay attention to details."

Celeste’s eyes darted wildly around the empty concrete garage, searching for her private guards, her fixers, her legal team. But the bay was empty save for Vance standing by the Maybach and Evelyn stepping silently out of the service stairwell behind them.

"You can't touch me," Celeste spat, her voice rising in a shrill, defensive octave as she tried to claw back a shred of her authority. "My family owns half the judges in this county. If I don't walk out of this garage, the entire Vane syndicate will tear your empire down to dust before dawn!"

"Your family doesn't own anything anymore," Lorenzo replied, stopping just a few feet away from her. He didn't raise his voice, yet every word carried the absolute, crushing weight of an executioner's verdict. "Your offshore accounts are frozen. Your corporate ledgers are currently sitting on the desk of the federal prosecutor's office. And your father has already disconnected his encrypted line, realizing his golden child just traded his entire empire for a botched assassination attempt."

Celeste staggered back, her knees hitting the bumper of her car. The realization that her grand design had completely imploded washed over her face, turning her skin chalk-white.

Lorenzo turned his head slightly, his dark eyes shifting past her shoulder to lock directly onto Evelyn standing near the service doors.

"Evelyn," Lorenzo called out softly.

Evelyn walked forward out of the shadows, her heels clicking sharply against the concrete floor. She stopped beside Lorenzo, looking down at the woman who had casually plotted the slaughter of an entire restaurant full of people—including an ordinary waitress just trying to pay her rent—without losing a wink of sleep.

Celeste looked up, her eyes narrowing with venomous hatred as she recognized the girl from The Obsidian. "You... you’re the waitress. You're a nobody. A street rat from Cicero."

"I used to be," Evelyn said, her voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of fear. She met Celeste’s furious gaze without blinking an inch. "Now, I'm the person watching you lose everything you built on lies."

Lorenzo stepped past Celeste, pulling open the door of the Maybach and gesturing for Evelyn to take her seat inside. Vance remained behind to handle the final details, his hand resting calmly on his holster as Celeste slid helplessly down the side of her car onto the cold concrete floor.

Evelyn climbed into the warm, leather-lined interior of the luxury sedan, settling back against the seat as Lorenzo slid in beside her. The heavy doors sealed shut, cutting off the damp chill of the basement.

As the Maybach glided smoothly out of the subterranean garage into the glittering, neon-lit arteries of the Chicago night, Evelyn looked out the tinted window at the towering silhouette of The Obsidian piercing the winter sky. The Cicero studio felt like a lifetime ago. The fear was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating power that ran deeper than any bloodline in the city.

Lorenzo reached across the console, his fingers brushing hers as the car sped forward into the dark, uncharted future they were building together.
