Chapter 7 - Blood and Balances

The digital screens along the wall flickered, casting a sickly green and blue glow across the sleek conference table as Vance pulled up encrypted financial ledgers stolen from the Vane family's primary holding accounts. The penthouse had quieted down; the tactical operatives had retreated to the lower security levels, leaving only Lorenzo, Vance, and Evelyn standing around the glowing display.

"If the Vanes are financing a coordinated hit inside my own restaurant, they aren't just relying on muscle," Lorenzo said, leaning over the glass table with his hands flat against the surface. "A hit like that requires liquidity. Millions in untraceable capital moved through shell corporations in less than forty-eight hours."

Evelyn stepped closer, her eyes scanning the endless columns of numbers, account numbers, and corporate titles scrolling past. Years of managing her father’s chaotic receipt boxes and picking through the financial wreckage of her own ruined life had given her an unusual, razor-sharp eye for hidden patterns.

"They're using real estate fronts," Evelyn said suddenly, pointing a slender finger directly at a seemingly innocuous line item on the screen.

Vance blinked, leaning in. "That’s a commercial laundry chain on the West Side. It clears audit every quarter."

"It clears audit because the volume doesn't match the water consumption," Evelyn replied, her voice dropping into the steady, focused rhythm of a dealer calling out a hand. "Look at the utility overhead compared to the dry-cleaner revenue. They're processing cash through industrial washing machines—literally washing money. But look at the routing numbers for the offshore subsidiaries."

She traced her finger across the screen to a secondary subsidiary registered under an obscure shell company named Aegis Holdings.

Lorenzo’s dark eyes narrowed as he studied the data trail she had highlighted in seconds. A slow, dangerous smile crept across his mouth. "Aegis. That's Celeste’s personal investment portfolio. She’s been skimming capital right out from under her father’s nose to fund her own independent enforcement cell."

"Which means she isn't just acting as a pawn for the Vane dynasty," Vance added, his voice grim. "She’s building her own faction to take over the entire operation once Lorenzo is out of the picture."

Evelyn pulled her hand back, crossing her arms over her chest as the full weight of the political chess match sank in. "She played both sides. She used her engagement to Lorenzo to force a merger of territories, and simultaneously hired outside hit squads to eliminate him so she could inherit the combined empire without sharing power."

"Ambitious," Lorenzo noted, his tone devoid of anger, filled only with cold, calculating appreciation. "And completely fatal if left unchecked." He turned his head, locking his dark gaze onto Evelyn. "You found her financial blind spot in less than five minutes. It took my forensic accountants three weeks to flag Aegis."

"My dad taught me how to hide money from loan sharks," Evelyn said dryly, a bitter edge coating her words. "Turns out, hiding a few grand from a bookie uses the exact same math as hiding millions from a federal indictment. The scale is bigger, but the panic of the people running the numbers is identical."

"Then let's use that panic against them," Lorenzo said, straightening up to his full height. He turned to Vance. "Reach out to our contacts within the city council. Leak selected fragments of Aegis Holdings’ ledger to the federal prosecutor handling the Vane family's tax fraud investigations. Let the government do the heavy lifting on their legal front."

"And the physical front, Boss?" Vance asked, his hand drifting toward his jacket.

"Celeste thinks she won the opening round because we survived the north exit," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, freezing finality. "She’s going to try to consolidate her power at the annual Vane Charity Gala tomorrow night at the Palmer House. That’s where we strike back."

Evelyn’s breath caught. "A public gala? With hundreds of politicians, judges, and socialites in attendance?"

May you like

"Especially then," Lorenzo replied, stepping close enough that Evelyn could feel the warmth radiating from his frame. "Nothing shatters a dynasty faster than exposing the rot right in front of the people who worship them."
