Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of a Fall

Panic spread through the grand ballroom like wildfire. High-ranking politicians scrambled toward the exits, desperate to distance themselves from the radioactive financial exposure flashing across the screens. Judges adjusted their ties, sweating profusely as they realized their private patron's illicit accounting had just been broadcast to half the city's power brokers.

Celeste shoved her way through the parting crowd of horrified socialites, her emerald gown swirling around her ankles as she marched straight toward the private service elevators at the back of the mezzanine level. Her face was twisted into a mask of pure, venomous rage.

Evelyn tracked her every move from the shadows of the pillar, her hand resting calmly inside the pocket of her velvet dress where a small, encrypted burner phone vibrated against her palm.

“She’s bolting toward the private service elevators,” Evelyn reported into her comms unit, her voice ice-cold. “She knows her operation is completely exposed.”

“Let her run,” Lorenzo’s voice echoed back instantly, calm and resonant. “She’s heading for the sub-basement loading dock where her personal vehicle is parked. She thinks she can slip out of the city before the feds pick up the trail.”

“And if she doesn't?”

“Then she’ll run straight into a trap of her own making,” Lorenzo replied smoothly. “Meet me at the service exit on Level B.”

Evelyn didn't hesitate. She turned on her heel, slipping through the labyrinth of back corridors, service stairs, and administrative hallways that she had mastered studying architectural blueprints provided by Vance. The air down here smelled of old concrete, industrial steam pipes, and distant laundry chemicals—far away from the glittering, shattered illusion of the ballroom upstairs.

When she reached the heavy steel fire doors of Level B sub-basement, she pushed them open a fraction of an inch and peered out into the dimly lit concrete loading bay.

Celeste was already there, pacing frantically beside a sleek black Audi parked near the freight elevators. Her phone was pressed desperately to her ear, her voice echoing off the concrete walls in a shrill, hysterical shriek.

"What do you mean, the accounts are frozen?! Move the capital to the Cayman subsidiaries right now! I don't care about the federal audit—override the firewall!" Celeste screamed into the phone, her hands trembling violently.

The heavy sliding security gate at the far end of the loading dock groaned open, slicing through the concrete silence.

A pair of headlights cut through the gloom. A heavy black Maybach glided smoothly into the subterranean bay, its engine purring like a caged predator before coming to a dead halt directly blocking Celeste’s escape route.

The rear door clicked open. Lorenzo Moretti stepped out into the damp garage, his dark suit immaculate, his expression carved from absolute, unyielding granite.

Celeste froze, dropping her phone. It hit the concrete with a hollow clatter, the screen cracking against the floor.
