Chapter 5 - The Fifth-Floor Suite

The morning sun broke through the grey London-esque clouds, casting long, sharp shadows across the manicured lawns of the Blackwood estate. Inside the fifth-floor executive suite, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the chaotic violence of the ballroom gala less than twelve hours prior.

The suite was vast, minimalist, and bathed in natural light from floor-to-ceiling smart glass windows that overlooked the private helipad and the dense emerald forest surrounding the perimeter. A sleek, matte-black glass desk dominated the center of the room, surrounded by ergonomic leather chairs and dual monitors currently displaying real-time financial feeds from the Tokyo and New York stock exchanges.

Ivy Lancaster stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror in the adjoining private dressing room, staring at her reflection.

The navy maid’s uniform was gone, neatly folded and placed inside a cardboard box by the door. In its place hung a tailored charcoal-grey pantsuit from a bespoke Italian designer whose label she recognized instantly. The fabric was exquisitely weighted wool, cut with razor-sharp precision to drape flawlessly over her fuller silhouette, emphasizing her natural dignity rather than attempting to conceal it. Her dark hair, previously tied back into a severe, invisible bun, had been styled by a personal assistant who had arrived quietly at seven o'clock that morning—it now fell in loose, polished waves around her shoulders.

A sharp knock sounded at the heavy oak door connecting the suite to the private hallway.

"Come in," Ivy said, her voice steady and clear, carrying none of the hesitant subservience she had worn like armor for the past three years.

The door swung open, and Ronan Blackwood stepped inside. He had already been up for hours; his black suit was immaculate, his silver-and-black silk tie knotted with absolute precision. He stopped a few feet away, his dark eyes sweeping over her from head to toe. A flicker of approval—dark, intense, and unmistakable—passed through his gaze.

"The suit suits you," Ronan said, his voice smooth and resonant in the quiet room.

"It’s slightly restrictive across the shoulders," Ivy replied coolly, turning to face him with her hands resting lightly on the edge of the glass table. "Though I suppose I’ll manage, provided I don't have to dodge any more riding crops."

A faint smirk touched the corner of Ronan’s mouth. "The riding crop has already been incinerated, along with everything else Vivienne left behind in the east wing. As of twenty minutes ago, Arthur Hale’s primary banking accounts were frozen by federal regulators based on the preliminary audit files your old firm compiled three years ago."

Ivy’s eyes widened slightly. "You moved that fast?"

"When you have the right leverage, you don't wait for permission," Ronan said, walking closer until he stood just a foot away from her. The clean, crisp scent of cedar and expensive tobacco drifted over her senses. He reached out, his fingers brushing lightly against the lapel of her new jacket, straightening a fold with deliberate care. "Your office is through that door. Your assistant, a young woman named Sarah who happens to be Maya Lin’s older sister, is downstairs organizing your files."

Ivy looked up, surprise flickering in her dark eyes. "You hired Maya's sister?"

"Loyalty is earned through action, Ivy, not lineage," Ronan said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a intensity that made the air between them feel charged. "And last night, you proved that your loyalty is unbreakable. Now let's see what you can do when you finally have the power to strike back."
