Chapter 9 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The private penthouse on the top floor of the Blackwood estate was a masterpiece of modern architecture and obsidian glass. At midnight, the city below stretched out like a vast sea of glittering neon constellations, the distant hum of traffic fading into a low, soothing white noise against the triple-paned windows.

Ivy stood near the curved glass wall, holding a crystal glass of sparkling water, watching the distant lights of the financial district. Her charcoal-grey suit jacket hung over the back of a nearby velvet sofa; her crisp white blouse was unbuttoned at the top collar, revealing the clean, neat line of the medical bandage still wrapped securely around her right shoulder.

A soft click echoed behind her as the private elevator doors opened and closed.

Footsteps approached—heavy, deliberate, and entirely familiar. Ronan walked into the penthouse, having discarded his suit jacket and tie entirely. His white dress shirt was open at the throat, the sleeves still rolled up to his forearms, framing his powerful build in the dim amber lighting of the room.

"Sarah sent over the final consolidation reports for the Hale assets," Ronan said, tossing a slim black tablet onto the coffee table. He walked up behind her, stopping just inches away, though he didn't touch her. "Everything has been absorbed into the Blackwood holding trust. Your old auditing firm has been reinstated with a full public apology and a five-million-dollar endowment from our foundation."

Ivy turned her head slightly, looking back at him over her shoulder. A genuine, soft smile touched her lips—the first true smile he had ever seen on her face. "You didn't have to fund the endowment, Ronan."

"I wanted to," he replied simply. He stepped closer, closing the tiny distance between them until his chest nearly brushed her back. He reached out, his long fingers gently tracing the edge of the bandage on her shoulder. "How is the wound?"

"Healing," she whispered, her heart skipping a beat as his thumb brushed ever so lightly against her skin, avoiding the raw center with practiced care. "Though your obsession with my shoulder is becoming slightly concerning."

"Everything about you is becoming an obsession, Ivy," Ronan murmured, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling timbre that vibrated against her spine.

Before she could form a reply, a sudden, sharp sound shattered the quiet ambiance of the penthouse.

Clang.

It wasn't a sound from inside the room. It came from the private service stairwell located behind the reinforced oak door leading to the hallway—a heavy, metallic clatter, as if a metal tray or a heavy set of keys had been dropped against the concrete floor.

Ronan’s body went completely rigid in a fraction of a second. The relaxed, intimate atmosphere vanished instantly, replaced by the razor-sharp alertness of an apex predator.

"Stay here," Ronan commanded softly, his hand dropping away from her shoulder as he spun around toward the hallway door.

"Ronan, wait—" Ivy started, but he was already moving with terrifying, silent speed, his hand sliding beneath the left side of his belt where a matte-black Sig Sauer pistol rested in a concealed leather holster.

He reached the heavy oak door, gripped the brass handle, and threw it open with a sudden, violent yank.

The private hallway was dark, illuminated only by the faint green glow of the emergency exit signs. But standing near the corner of the service alcove, breathing heavily and trembling from head to toe, was a figure in a familiar white silk dress that was now torn, stained with mud, and utterly ruined.
