Chapter 2 - The Secret Archive

The interior of the Caldwell mansion was normally kept in a state of immaculate, museum-like silence, but tonight it felt like a tomb holding its breath before a catastrophe. The amber wall sconces cast long, jagged shadows across the polished marble floors as Ethan led us through the labyrinthine corridors toward the executive wing.

We bypassed the grand staircase and took the private service elevator hidden behind a mahogany bookshelf in the study. The small metal compartment smelled faintly of ozone and old dust, dropping silently down into the sub-basement levels beneath the mansion’s foundation.

"Where are we going?" I asked, keeping one arm securely around Noah’s shoulders as he leaned sleepily against my side, exhausted by the monumental effort of his morning steps.

"Margaret’s secure archive," Ethan replied, his eyes fixed on the illuminated floor indicator above the door. "If she’s been siphoning the trust and altering Noah’s medical records for five years, she didn't keep those files in a filing cabinet upstairs. She kept them where no one—not even me—would ever think to look."

The elevator hummed to a halt with a soft ding. The heavy iron doors slid open to reveal a dimly lit concrete corridor lined with heavy steel security doors, each marked with numerical cipher locks.

Ethan walked briskly down the hall, pulling a heavy brass master key from his pocket and punching a six-digit code into the digital keypad of the third door on the left. With a heavy pneumatic hiss, the steel barrier unsealed and swung inward.

The room inside took my breath away. It wasn't just an office; it was a digital and physical command center. Dozens of computer monitors flickered with live surveillance feeds covering every square inch of the estate, the perimeter gates, the surrounding woods, and—most disturbingly—every single bedroom inside the mansion, including Noah’s.

"She was watching us," I whispered, a wave of nausea rolling over me as I stared at a grid of screens showing live feeds of Noah’s bed, my own room, and Ethan’s private study. "Every minute of every day."

"Not just watching," Ethan said, his voice dangerously soft as he walked over to a heavy oak desk in the center of the room. He pulled open the center drawer, which had been forced open with a crowbar. Inside, a small, encrypted hard drive had been ripped violently out of its docking port. "She knew we found the second bottle. She knew the moment I questioned her in the garden. She’s been cleaning house."

Before Ethan could inspect the desk further, a sharp, electronic beep echoed from the main console near the back wall.

One of the secondary monitors flashed red, displaying an external alert from the estate's primary server room upstairs.

> WARNING: ROOT DIRECTORY OVERRIDE DETECTED. MANUAL INITIATION OF FACILITY LOCKDOWN.

Ethan cursed under his breath, sprinting across the room to a master control terminal. His fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard, but the screen immediately flashed a stark, unyielding error message: ACCESS DENIED. ADMINISTRATIVE PRIVILEGES REVOKED.

"She locked us down," Ethan muttered, slamming his fist against the edge of the console. "She’s initiated the facility's emergency containment protocol. Every reinforced steel shutter on every window and door in this mansion has just dropped into place. We are trapped in the sub-basement."

Noah whimpered, burying his face in my jacket. "Daddy, it's dark. I want to go outside."

I knelt down, wrapping my arms tightly around him. "Hey, look at me, buddy. You're safe. I'm right here." I looked up at Ethan, my heart pounding against my ribs. "If the shutters are down and the doors are sealed, how does she plan to get out?"

Ethan’s face went completely pale as a horrifying realization hit him.

"She's not trying to escape," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "She’s trying to burn the evidence—and everyone who can read it."
