Chapter 9 - The Railway Ambush

The abandoned railway maintenance yard off Sector 9 was a rusted labyrinth of overgrown tracks, derelict passenger cars, and crumbling brick locomotive sheds swallowed by weeds and fog.
Our two unmarked tactical vans rolled into the outer perimeter with their lights off, coasting silently over the gravel until we reached the shadow of a massive, rusted coal hopper.
Ethan killed the engines. Behind us, six heavily armed enforcers spilled out of the second van, fanning out into the darkness with military precision.
"Thermal imaging shows three heat signatures inside the central dispatch office," Ethan whispered into our comm-link earpieces as we huddled behind a stack of rotting wooden crates. "Margaret, one of Vance’s local lieutenants, and a computer tech."
"They're finishing the upload," I whispered back, checking the slide of the compact pistol Ethan had handed me before we left the villa. My hands were steady—a surprising calm having settled over my nerves.
"We breach in three seconds," Ethan instructed the team, raising his hand to count down. Three... Two... One... Go.
The heavy metal door of the dispatch office didn't just open—it exploded inward under the force of a synchronized kinetic breaching charge.
Debris flew in all directions as Ethan and his men surged into the room, shouting rapid commands.
"Down on the ground! Do it now!"
I followed right behind Ethan, stepping over the splintered door frame. Inside, the scene was pure chaos. Vance’s lieutenant went for his holster, but an enforcer’s rifle butt caught him square across the jaw, dropping him instantly to the concrete floor. The computer tech threw his hands up in surrender, screaming in terror as he backed away from glowing monitors.
And sitting at a folding table in the center of the room, staring at us with wide, dilated eyes of absolute disbelief, was Margaret Hargrove.
Her laptop screen flashed brightly, displaying a progress bar reading: SYNC COMPLETE: 100%.
"You..." Margaret whispered, her voice trembling as she looked from Ethan to me. "How... how did you find us? Vance’s network is impenetrable!"
"Your network security is about as reliable as your medical ethics, Margaret," Ethan sneered, walking forward and kicking the laptop off the table, smashing it into pieces against the floor.
Margaret scrambled backward against the wall, her face twisting into a mask of pure venom. "You think you won? Look at the screen before you broke it, Ethan! The files were already transmitted to Victor Vance! By now, every federal judge, corrupt cop, and corporate asset on your payroll belongs to him. You're ruined!"
Ethan stopped just inches from her, his expression a dark, terrifying void.
"Vance won't get a damn thing," Ethan said coldly, pulling out his encrypted satellite phone. "Because the moment your little sync started, Leo injected a logic bomb into your terminal. Whatever you uploaded to Vance's mainframe wasn't my financial records—it was a military-grade ransomware virus that just locked down his entire syndicate network."
Margaret’s jaw dropped. All color vanished from her face, leaving her looking hollow, defeated, and utterly ruined.
"Take her," Ethan ordered without looking back. "Put her in a deep-seabed transport heading out of the country. I never want to see her face, hear her name, or remember she existed in this city again."

Two enforcers grabbed Margaret by the arms, dragging her screaming and kicking out into the cold rain as she cursed our names into the night.
